I would have very few comments to read if that was the case. I'm pretty sure almost everyone has posted something that would have caused me to hit the button. |

People love to hate on stats, but you know what's worse? The eye test. Because according to some people, Dahlin looks bad. Except see no.

Hard calling him the best defensive dman when he's starting nearly 80% of the time in the Ozone and doesn't kill penalties at all.
Also, taking too many penalties leading to goals and while killing it on the PP, he gave the other team a shorty.
The eye test shows he is not good defensively. Probably the least defensive dman on the team so far this season.

He did have a bad game defensively last night.
He also had some great moments.
It was a bad Dahlin game.
A bad Dahlin game is a good game for most of our D men |

Not 80%, not even close. It's 66.7%. And don't quote a stat and not know what it means. Most stats people now recognize that zone starts aren't a good indicator of much.
He has taken three penalties. I don't care if they lead to goals or not, that's not indicative of his play, it's indicative of the PK, guys like Risto not killing them. He's taken three penalties, end of story. I'd like that number to be one or two, but I'm not worried about it.
The shorty was partially his fault, but there were five guys on the ice and they all kind of watched it happen. It's not like he tripped at the blue line and gave a clear cut breakaway.
Your eyes are lying to you. He's only been on the ice twice all season when a goal was scored, including that shorty. If he keeps that up he will be on the ice for 41 goals all season, which would be an elite number.
See this is the problem with your eyes. You see Risto banging on people and working down low, and you say Yay! Defense! Except while he's fighting and losing and giving up goals, dahlin just zips the puck over to Miller who zips it up the ice to someone who scores.
We crush opponents with Miller and Dahlin on the ice. We break even when the rest of our D are out there.

Which ones ? I was off on the Broncos this year and mitts getting 50 points last year but other then that I’ve been spot on a lot of things.
I said we should of taken Draisatil over Reinhart before the draft in 2014. Ask Homie to post the thread he had it bookmarked for years.
Last November it was Lafreniere buzz here on these threads and everyone was convinced the Blues were handing us a top pick this year and I said they weren’t going to be a bottom 10 team (didn’t have them winning the cup but who did).
I said Scandella should have been moved as soon as the lottery balls popped up in our favour for Dahlin. Then the guy went and had a miserable season last year. (4 games this year isn’t going to change my mind on that, if anything shows how well Joker is playing).
Said the Sabres were going to collapse during the 10 game win streak last year and was the tank commander for Cozens (whom 80% of this board criticized me for wanting the team to lose yet it’s the same posters slotting him into our top 6 next year)
While everyone was posting Thompson doing pirouettes last year I was one of his lone defenders saying he was very raw and still saw him as a middle 6 option once he filled out and got his confidence back.
Said we were going centre at 7 even though everyone was on the Caufield train.
Said Boldy was going to get picked before Caufield.
Anything else ? I got more. |

Zone starts don't mean what people think they mean. Why? I put Dahlin out in the offensive zone and lose the faceoff, it's a defensive zone shift within 6-7 seconds. All there is to really read from zone starts is that Dahlin is our best offensive defensemen and is being deployed as such.
TOI is hardly a factor. He's playing 18:36 and Risto plays 24:14. By ratios, Risto will give up more goals because he's out there more. But not that much. If dahlin played 33% more, he would have been on the ice for 1.33 goals against at even strength compared to Risto's 5.
Conversely, Risto's goals for need to be adjusted based on the fact he plays more. So Dahlin's 6 goals for would actually be 8 compared to Risto's 6.
There is no way to read stats that doesn't end up at this. Rasmus Dahlin is an elite defenseman. He was a top 20 D last year, and he's picked up where he left off. He's also 19 and makes the occasional dumb play. But consider that he's this great WITH those dumb plays, and then consider how amazing he will be at 22 when those mistakes are gone.

I'm glad you took all that from me saying that just putting basic stats out there 4 games in meant that. JFC.
Where have I said Dahlin isn't great?
Zone starts absolutely matter, don't believe me then look up players that start heavily in one zone or another and look at their CF% it's very strongly correlated higher to high O-Zone and vice versa. I have another for you. O-Zone start, face-off win, goal. We can play that game all day long.

Only six players on the team even have more defensive zone starts than offensive, and one is Rodrigues who only played one game. Two others, Risto and McCabe, are not far from 50%.
Everyone else is skewed high because the twins and okposo get about 75% defensive zone starts. Does that mean Okposo is better defensively than Eichel who is around 68% offensive zone starts? No. It means Okposo is useless offensively so he's never put out there in scoring situations. What else does it mean? He's on my team so he has to play somewhere.
I don't think people realize that zone starts only count off faceoffs. Now ask yourself, why is dahlin always out there for an offensive zone faceoff? Because he is great, same reason Jack is out there. Am I ever going to come out of a tv timeout and put Larsson out for an ozone start?
Zone starts tell you if a player is good offensively or not. They don't tell you much else.
