Chris Stewart is getting a contract I thought we were just joking about this
- 2Real

not sure why this is a surprise being he went on the trip to Prague as well as the western trip. it was just a matter of time. Honestly I am fine with him replacing Bunnaman who struggled in Vancouver. I don't like Raffl centering the 4th line so I hope Patrick is back soon. I will be annoyed if Twarynski is scratched for Stewart once Patrick is back and Laughton goes to the 4th line.

Yes, Stewart brings toughness, the ability to fight and leadership and intangibles to the room. If that's all he brings, then it's a wasted signing. If the Flyers weren't so tight against the cap, then it wouldn't really matter as the 13th forward. They have even less flexibility now. Once Patrick returns, even less.
- MJL

well, gm and hockey coaches around the league would disagree. If all he could do was fight then yes, but the things you listed are important to the team. He will mostly be the 13th forward and is also excellent on the shootout.

So at that price point would you have retained simmonds? because what you listed as what he brings is mostly the same thing everyone said about simmonds. yes simmonds is a little better right now at offense, but is also playing higher in the lineup. just curious

well, to me that's because no one was willing to fight simmer, manning wasn't here to take a beating and gudas constantly tried. Wilson is goonish but plays a heavy game and will fight. ferland the same. simmer, lucic, reaves, martin, clifford, mcleod, glass, kassian.(just a few) Even St. Louis had guys that would fight and stand up for teammates and were able to fight. not throwing slaps like Semin. Even guys like Ovie have been dropping them recently. It's even better to me when the skilled guys throw. It's not the end all no. these players are still a valuable part of thier teams

Yes game has changed. Burke went off about this last year talking about how players used to hate each other and how now its a picnic in the hallways after games.

- Peter Richards

Morin would beat Stewart like a drum if this was just about icing a policeman.

Im not a big fan of this move...I dont think it matters a ton at this point in time, but once Patrick is healthy that 4th line needs to be stacked as much as possible with competent 2 way players that can keep up with pace of play.

Do you still think the Flyers first callup will be Gabriel?
- Feanor

no not at this point. and it was a poking statement from yesterday. Yes i said everyone will freak out when they call him up before farabee. But now that stewart is signed i'm guessing, 13thh forward, plays against bigger teams bar future injuries.

i didn't see them signing stewart if at all until around the holidays or just after.

Also, If he is doing good in the ahl, i could easily see gabriel getting some games with the big club.

Agree Raffl should only play winger. But Bunnaman and Pitlick are not good in Face offs
Maybe in case of Pitlick because of injury

We'll see if he'll mostly be the 13th forward. If he is then it's not a big deal. Like I said previously, I wasnt impressed with him in camp and pre.season.

Simmonds has nothing to do with this.

Stewart looked like a wussy in his two preseason fights. He got smoked both times.
- Feanor

This is just the dumbest comment of all time. A guy willing to fight at all...looked like a wussy. And no he didn’t get smoked, weirdo.

The Flyers should just ignore Lucic and let him run around in irrelevance.

easier said then done. played multiple sports growing up competitively, was active duty in the marines, coached three high school sports and currently work for a university.

Have not done anything with pro athletes, but at every level, if you are competitive this is almost impossible unless your team is just that much better. Winning doesn't brew much frustration. I get what your saying, play between the whistles. But if they are taking runs at players during the game, big hits or what not. yeah players will be looking over their shoulders or a little slower to dive into that corner. My opinion.

Cool. We can book end him with Stewart. Now all we need is a center and we have a modern day Hanson's line.

I still want to see Provy drop the gloves. He is not a fighter and never has been but he does boxing-style training in the offseason. I'd love to see some non-expecting punk entice him to a fight and get pummeled.

I miss the old NHL.

- cdearth23

Well, he manhandled Sanheim in juniors.

I'll never understand why people watch hockey for the fights and yearn for them

Go watch boxing or mma those guys are literally experts in fighting Italy a much better fight than any in the NHL

I'll make it crystal clear. There is absolutely no reason for Gabriel to play a single second as a Flyer this season, or any future season.

There really is no defense of the Stewart signing

Dude had 13 pts in the british hockey league...we already had gabriel and andreoff under contract if they really needed a tough guy. This is just a brain scratcher from Fletcher

Agreed. Kudos to the guy for his offseason dedication, but he just isn't an NHL-caliber player.
