this is fan-(frank)ing-tastic

#Leafs currently have $380k in cap space from LTIR relief, too little to recall any player. Tavares would also have to be injured 10 games & 24 days for LTIR placement.

With 20 players on the roster, the club is also ineligible for a $0 cap hit Emergency Roster Exemption recall

So many dopey Islander fans were laughing and hoping they couldn't resign Marner this summer. I was over here praying they did because I knew it would wreck their cap.

They have nine forwards, ONE defenseman, and one goaltender under contract for next year and, as of right now, they'll have about $16M in cap space to get all those spots filled. I'm sure the cap will go up...but still. About $20M to fill spots for about 3F, 5D, and a backup.....that's stretching things pretty thin.

edit: Sorry, Hyman and Dermott on are LTIR. So they have ten forwards and two defensemen under contract for next year

It should be pretty fantastic to watch from the outside. You have to admit that their core is pretty sick though.

I just have to laugh, this is a team with $113 million in actual payroll this year

I don't know, I would be pretty happy to have the Leafs' problems.

Yeah their forwards are fantastic. They have two legitimately awesome top lines and a couple other solid pieces. But their defense stinks and if Freddy Andersen ever goes down they are trotting out an AHL goaltender, basically. They're like a souped-up, more expensive version of the Islanders from two seasons ago. Score a ton, get scored on a ton.

They'll find a way out of it. They have an endless supply of money. But for now, I'm going to enjoy it.

My guess is they sell Nylander for a defenseman. I'd love for it to be Leddy.

Georgiev would be the perfect target for them, but considering their situation, I'd want a poop ton in return

He's gonna need a new deal too though. It's early, but if we assume he plays as well this year as he did last year....it seems unlikely they can afford him.

You could always roll the dice and try and flip Shesterkin and get some nice pieces from them. But I assume that one doesn't move the needle for you guys.

I think Toronto could use a guy as solid as Georgiev this season though

Hutchinson is awful

If I was a Leafs fan, I’d almost hope that Tavares was out 6-8 weeks. Don’t forget the cap is daily. They could use those savings once Tavares is on LTIR to go out and get serviceable guys for the defense. Then when he comes back, you are primed to make a run.

....but then they'd be non-compliant when he came back. LTIR just allows you exceed the upper limit of the cap for while that player is designated on it.

I sure hope someone talks some sense into this kid! Only make 750K oh I feel so sorry for him! All he needs is some time to adjust to NHL hockey it won't take that long!!!

lol. I hear ya.
But, to be fair... the kid is just that, a kid. He's half a world from home, learning a new language along with a new style of game. And he's only making $70K. I tried to find a number, but was unsuccessful, regardless wasn't he making 7 figures a year ago in Russia? That's a tough hit!
Don't get me wrong. I want to see him on Broadway badly. I can just sympathize with why he might be feeling "homesick."

The cap is daily though. What you save every day is rolled over to the next day. If they saved enough money from being out, in theory they could be 1-2 million over the cap and be fine
