I get the impression Ullmark is very good on the first save but I have real questions about his rebound control and his ability to get back in time for second and third efforts.

That, a tendency to occasionally overcommit on the first shot, and the fact that we’ve been seeing all this since he first came through (and it doesn’t seem to be going away) lead me to think we need another long term solution.

Amen Brother, I think Ullmark belongs in the league but i cant seem him being a long term starting solution.

This is our first back to back today. Yes he should get a get a start in a back to back but Huton has a great performance and then wham on the bench the next game.

He got 2 days off. We're in the middle of 4 games in 6 days. It's not a big deal which end of a back to back he starts.

We will see what he looks like post surgery. Ullmark just seems like he can't move laterally without overcompensating, and I'm not so sure it isn't because of his surgery.

I'll feel a lot better about Ukka once he shows he is the same player.

The key to the Sabres’ start has to be new coach Ralph Krueger that has the group playing extremely staunch defense. They rank fourth in shot attempts and expected goals against leading to stingy actual numbers. The Sabres have become difficult to penetrate on most nights which would’ve been hard to believe when looking at the mostly unimposing roster.

I still don’t think much of the group of players here outside the stars and wouldn’t be surprised if the team’s shot share comes back down to earth going forward, but it’s clear Krueger has been able to get more out of this group than previous regimes could. Whether he can get enough to bring this team back into the playoffs will be one of this season’s most fascinating storylines.

I understand the concern here, but besides the goal that was called off for offsides, I don't think there were any scored off a rebound last night.

Sure, I was. I think you're going to an extreme saying this is a big deal. I'm not questioning the coaches on this. There could easily be reasons for their decision that we'll never hear.

I don't disagree.
However, in Ullmark's defense, the old adage of the 1st save is the responsibility of the goalie, the 2nd (and 3rd) are those of the Dmen comes into play here.

You point yesterday about needing a mix of defensive minded Dmen rather than all puck movers once again rings true.

That said, I don't see Ullmark as a No 1, but he could develop into a decent backup.

I didn’t see the whole game, but I did see a softer go right through him at the end of the second period, and I don’t think it lifts his results to be bad some nights for other reasons.

Would you say rebounds lead to more opportunities?
Would you say more opportunities lead to tiring down your team?
Would you say a tired team is more likely to give up a goal?

is the answer no to any of the above?

Krueger is proving, albeit in a small sample size, that he can get more out of/ make more successful the team and many individual players .
I hope Botts recognizes that with a better roster, the Sabres could be for real under Ralphie-boys leadership. More specifically that he doesn't get fooled into retaining some of these UFA's that they have lost with previously.
Be bold, go get upgrades and let Ralphie loose!!!

Not playing Hutton yesterday was a bit odd. He was coming off a shutout, so typically you don't see a goalie change there. It was inevitable that they were each getting a game between yesterday and today, I just figured it would be the other way around and Hutton would play yesterday and Ullmark would get today.

I think the extreme he's referring to was the second part of your post, fwiw.

Thanks. It's a bit odd, but there could be many things going on to justify it.

Sabres will win if the Kings put Jonathan Slow (oops I mean Quick) in net tonight. He let in 5 goals on 36 shots the other night and is save percentage went up by 43 points. I predict a 4-0 Buffalo win.

Nick Ritchie was fined by the League for roughing up Sobotka last night.
