something to ponder
in the 2017 and 2018 nhl draft, botts drafted 7 D men, due to murray not addressing the pipeline
this leaves us thin at legit prospects up front
assuming the ship has sailed on cj smith
we have asplund, tage, pekar, davidsson, weissbach as the only legit prospects up front , drafted before 2019
all the more reason why any trade should be for picks/prospects
esp if tage is ready - homiedclown
Hopefully he can do a little up front with the blueprint from the back.
You forgot Risto2...and Cozens
A joker type forward prospect swap.
A miller like forward for a 3rd?
I can’t see the cap dump play working again so no Sheary and Hunwick type move...
An overseas player like pilot and risto2...
Then use the ‘20 draft focused on forwards. |

With all the ass-aching it’s worth noting that the Sabres are 7-1-1, and have shown an ability to win *even while* they’ve shown that they have room to improve.
And I don’t want to admit I drank the Kool-Aid this early in the season, but if we think Ralph Krueger has finished teaching this very young group, we’re making a terrible mistake.
There are more strides forward coming. And I like that. |

Without looking, Buffalo with Casey, MoJo and Eichel have to be in the high 30's / low 40's for FO-W.
When looking at all the FOs in a game I can see that winning a couple extra normally isn't a big deal. It is the special situation where they increase in importance... like on special teams and at the end of the game in your own end...those become much more important. - IonSabres
Edit: I'm wrong...Jack at 51%, Mojo at 33% PhatAss at 48% with Jack taking a little more than 50% of the draws of those three . Larry at 41% ... combined they are in the high 40's. Better than I anticipated ...especially Jack.

hockeybuzz is supported by sweatshop sweater ads. it is also filled with posters who jerkoff in their cars. it is for teens, and super old, disproportionately horny old men. if it were a real place, it would be an outlet mall, food court sports bar. you can smell some of the posters here. smells like divorce and tonawanda. - jimmy mcnaulty

I still would have preferred they pick a forward at 31 this year. Kaliyev and Lavoie were there.
Side note- Sabres pick Erik Portillo having a nice start to his season in the USHL for Dubuque, a 1.96 gaa and .902. |

We can spend dollars on forwards and use first rounder this year to grab another potential piece to the core. I like that he’s drafting d-men often as you can never have enough good d-men and a majority of our cap will be spent up front so we need a plethora of good defence man on the cheap. |

Eichel always gets going around game 20 and Dahlin has another few levels to hit.
For all the poop Mitts takes he’s got 6 points in 9 games and is a +5 with limited PP time. If he can continue to progress that definitely speeds up the timeline.

A bit of bad luck but I prefer the defense to play in front of their net in the d zone and the forwards cover the high spot. Hockey 101. Either way McCabe and Risto on the ice for all 3 shark goals and on the ice for none of the sabre goals - turbo044
How did Risto and McCabe end up with a +1 each? If they were on the ice for all goals against and none for, wouldn’t that be impossible?
Why does the replay show Scandella and Jokiharju on the ice for the first SJ goal?
I must live in an alternate universe.
What’s obvious to me, is that some people here are bent on hating Risto. Bent to the point where they make things up to make him look worse. Bent to the point where they share links to twitter replays showing Risto and Erod playing strong defense and blame them both for a goal that Anaheim made an outstanding play to score. Bent to the point that being on the ice for a goal against automatically means Risto made an outrageous mistake. Bent to the point where they criticize him for icing calls resulting from shooting the puck down at an empty net as instructed to do by the coaching staff.
Goals against happen. Sometimes no one is at fault, it’s just a damn good play by the opponents. When you play more than the other players, chances are that you’ll be on the ice for more goals against.
We have a coaching staff that analyzes everything, sees every play, sees every practice and are making decisions to result in the team’s best interest to win games. They see everything, and still maintain that Risto is the best defenseman on the roster to play the primary role and to be on the ice in those defensive situations.
You guys need to get over yourselves. You just look ridiculous at this point. Risto has made a few bad plays but overall is having a very good season. |

I guess my boring take is, if the players they draft play on the Buffalo Sabres during the regular season, it was a decent to great pick. Yes I want more forwards, but if the D players are good enough to play in nhl, we could use them as trade bait or cheap players on our team. At this time I have little to no complaints about drafting.

Good post, and they really needed to restock back there anyway. We have a pretty young group of forwards starting for us now. He has some time to refill those cupboards. |

Oh, so now Risto and McCabe are blamed for two PP goals against? It’s a pretty tough standard to be expected to not allow PP goals.
I know your point is that PPGs don’t result in a (-1), and I know you’re not the one making the original claim.
My point was they ended up +1 for the game, both Risto and McCabe. So, they must have been on the ice for a goal, and they definitely weren’t on the ice for the even strength goal against.
Sorry if I seem agitated, it’s not at you. I have just had my fill with the blatant hate for Risto when he is playing well. |

Risto is a good defenseman without the puck. He routinely makes the wrong decision with the puck that results in the other team continuing to create chances.
These two things can coexist, which is where the "watch the game" people like to see him break up a play in the corner or stuff a zone entry, but fail to acknowledge what an icing or a turnover mean when a better play is available. |
