Everything I have read about Montour is that he is good offensively, great skater who’ll join the rush, but bad defensively. Multiple sources say his defensive game is inconsistent and the Corsi numbers for chances against were terrible, worst in Anaheim amongst dmen. The California news sources covering the trade for Montour all pretty much say exactly this.
I have read his gap game is poor, defensive positioning is poor. Defensive game is inconsistent. A simple google search and you’ll see the same.
The positives to Montour are his skating and offensive production. But if you look at his advanced stats, his even strength points/60 are basically even to Risto. Not including PPPF/60 where Risto is far superior. Add to that him being a year older, smaller, hits much much less.
Yet so many act like he is better than a Risto and we should trade away Risto and can’t wait for Montour to get in the lineup. Even though we have Dahlin, Jokiharju, Pilut, and Gilmour who are similar players to Montour with varying degrees of skill better or worse, and nobody like Risto.
I am not trying to disparage Montour, I am sure he is overall a good hockey player. But he is no Risto.
I get it’s the fashion to hate what we know and love what we don’t, but I really do believe there are people here who’s judgement is clouded by their emotions and they aren’t looking at all the facts.
We have puck moving defensemen. We have offensive defensemen. We have small defensemen. We have Dahlin for the PP.
Montour is not capable of playing Risto’s role. Montour isn’t a PK defenseman. Montour isn’t physical like Risto is. Montour isn’t better defensively than Risto.
It would be nice to carry an abundance of offensive defenseman. But we already have Dahlin, and we have good offensive defenseman depth. We can only carry so many dmen, we only have so much cap room.
If we are going to trade a dman for some forward help, Montour has more value than the UFAs Scandella and Bogosian. Montour is a duplicate of other players we already have, less talented than Dahlin. Montour is not a substitute for Scandella, Miller or McCabe. He is a substitute for Dahlin, Jokiharju or Ristolainen. Only he is worse defensively that Risto and not as big, doesn’t hit like a Risto, isn’t suited for the top PK as well as Risto.
I expect Montour to be the one traded. It just makes sense.
I understand the idea of trading Scandella because he is a UFA, but we would need to replace that type of defenseman. We could with Bogosian, but he is a while off. And with the pairing of Scandella and Jokiharju having so much chemistry and playing well, I wouldn’t want to mess with that.
I would like to sign Scandella to an extension if we could agree to a reasonable contract.

With all the ass-aching it’s worth noting that the Sabres are 7-1-1, and have shown an ability to win *even while* they’ve shown that they have room to improve.
And I don’t want to admit I drank the Kool-Aid this early in the season, but if we think Ralph Krueger has finished teaching this very young group, we’re making a terrible mistake.
There are more strides forward coming. And I like that. - Der Kaiser
Hey Kaiser!
If you don't ever drink the Kool-aid till all the other kids on the block are already two pitchers in, do you get a trophy for holding out the longest? |

He scored a nice goal. Looking at this team now what we are missing in the top 6 is speed and size and Cozens fits the bill there. - Swedish_Jesus
I guarantee Gerbes didn’t even watch cousins last night and has no clue how he looked. He’s just hating on him because he’s a foot taller than his boy crush |

Lots of people see pekar as a bottom forward I see him being a impact player on the 2 ND line
And Cozens was terrible last night I don't no if he was sick but he was over thinking everything last night he needs to work on understanding how to play center - gerbe75pts
Dude, you are truly pathetic in your propaganda regarding your love of Cole Muffler and your hate for Dylan Cozens.
If you want to leave "scouting notes" you can't cherry pick only Negative notes on Cozens while simultaneously leaving only Positive notes on Cole Muffler.
Dude, why you hating on a player who currently has
10 games - 8 g 6 a 14 pts pace for 70 games 56 G 42 A
With your professional opinion of "He needs to learn how to play Center?
You are the epitome of a "Hack"

Can anyone articulate an argument that Ristolainen or McCabe has been better than Jokiharju or Scandella?
If not, why aren’t the minutes closer between the pairs - sbroads24
Showcasing Risto for a trade? That’s the only explanation i got |

Cozens did get 84 points last year so it is a bit of a drop off. How we Lethbridge has a much weaker team this year and at this point adding weight is more important then points. |

On a totally unrelated note, I think the Bills are still on bye week, including the coaches. 3rd and 3/4 of a yard, averaging 10 yds per carry - let’s pass |

Your math is wrong, he is ahead of last seasons pace.
Last yr he averaged 1.24pts per game
This yr he is averaging 1.4pts per game
That does not equate to a "bit of a drop off" |

They're struggling. Better get it goin' soon. I was worried the phins would come to play today. Fans in the seats getting restless. Not really digging the monochromatic red unis, either. |

Outsmarting themselves. They should run it down their throats all day. Miami hasn't stopped the run all year. |

I feel like the defense in general has been giving up the blueline a bit easier on the west coast trip compared to prior to that. I much prefer when they stand up at the blueline, even when bad reads happen. I hate when they back off the blueline, almost to the faceoff circles. - kingcong39

Statistics - loosely defined as stuff you use to make your point or stuff you use to refute someone else’s point.
Regardless, stats are not an end all be all. I wish the pedantic want to be GMs would realize, just stop it. You know nothing! |

Actually I hate using numbers to explain anything, but sometimes just watching doesn't work for some people. Maybe if you read more and posted less you would have noticed that. |
