Ok it says in this article Ericsson can be bought out? I don't think that's correct. As far as I know the 2 buyout periods are the week before the draft and in August if you have an RFA going to arbitration. I never heard of teams being able to buy out players if they clear waivers. Otherwise every team in the NHL would be doing this. Typical Red Wings Hack media.

Kulfan is wrong. Ericsson can not be bought out.

Detroit and Ericsson could mutually agree to terminate the contract, but it's hard to imagine why Ericsson would go along with that, considering there's still about $3 million left on the table for him.

A quick update. Fox Sports broadcast saying Ericsson is expected to be assigned to Grand Rapids. He can refuse to go, of course, but we’ll see what happens.

It's possible the Wings would allow him to not report by mutual agreement, but I doubt Ericsson would outright refuse unless he already had a contract lined up in Europe. Otherwise the Wings could suspend him without pay. Bruised ego or no, it's still a lot of dough.
