One way deals are to play in the NHL.
‘Rare’ I guess is a relative term. But something that has happened 11 times this calendar year, is about as rare as the calendar changing months. Which IMO is not rare. For a newborn it may be rare, for an old chunk of coal like me it is not.
Also, curious where you get the 1% figure. I am not saying it isn’t true, but I have my doubts. Also, at the beginning of the year when rosters are being trimmed is when the majority of waivers occur and it is less likely that a team will make a claim at that point because they don’t know how their team is performing, they have hopes for their players to perform well, and they don’t have the roster spots to make the claims off waivers which probably skews the percentage much lower. - Beethoven
That's not true. It just effects what they get paid in the minors. Sbisa makes 750k either way, so it's a one way deal.
I approximated 1% based on an average number of waived players per team and the number of claims. Maybe it's 1.5%. It's so low that it's not worth struggling to find historical numbers.

I live in San Diego...perhaps the only semi-sane city in the State and even here it's sliding fast. The weather is fantastic...the people and their politics are abomination. They have never seen a tax they won't vote for. I started a business 10 years ago, and if I knew then what I know now, i wouldn't have bothered. My Dad moved out here with me, but he's now planning on leaving because he can't afford to retire here. The cities are dirty, and getting dirtier on a scale that is tough to properly relay to someone not watching it. Our natural areas are full of homeless encampments and the refuse and human offal that goes with them. We have hazmat teams spraying down the streets with bleach to fight Typhus, and Hep A outbreaks. I have never seen such rapid decline in my life. The only thing keeping us here now is the kid in school. I cannot wait to leave. - SoCalPucks

I'm pretty sure we have a guy signed to a one way deal for the Amerks. Doesn't want the shuffle of being called up and sent down. Name is escaping me now, but there are one way AHL deals is the point. |

Regardless, you sign with one team, then snagged by another team a day later. WPG is clearly looking for cheap, short term help. Sbisa definitely isn't the answer. But they clearly reached out to him and he said no. But now he's stuck. - TheSabresTaco
Just curious why you think it's clear that they reached out to him? He's never played for them (he did play 5 years with Anaheim), he only played 9 games last year and 30 the year before. They may not even have known he was still interested in playing. There are still UFA dmen that are not playing that they could sign. |

The Bills and Sabres have a combined 13 wins before the end of October. That's only happened 3 times in the past 30 years per the Buffalo News. |

Maybe not absolutely clear, but I highly doubt they were just sitting on their thumbs, then they see Sbisa hit the waiver wire and they're look OOH WEEE let's snag that (frank)er!

my guess is that the suggestion, more accurately stated, is that the Sbisa claim is evidence that Winnipeg's need for defensemen, and the need for defensemen across the league, RIGHT NOW, adds an additional layer to the considerations surrounding waiving Gilmour, notwithstanding the historical rarity of such an occurence.
RIGHT?
