like i dont want to take Perrault (4.1 for another year) back from loseapeg which would probably have to be the deal - hubie
I'd like to think we're beyond the days finally of having to take back someone's garbage in order to get a halfway decent player in return for one we're willing to trade.
I get that the blueline is SUPER crowded right now and that other teams have a huge need in that department. But having an overabundance and not a shortage should make the trades favorable for us, not the other way around. We don't HAVE to trade anyone. It would make sense to, but we're not in dire straights, the other teams are. |

I'm not saying that nobody should be moved. I just don't think you'll see a move like Scandella for Rust where we essentially are "taking salary back" so to speak.
Moving him for a decent pick or prospect makes perfect senses. Moving him for Rust does not, IMO anyway. - HonkFortheGoose
We actually would be getting about 500,000 in cap relief, yes we would be taking on his salary for 2 more years. But he would bring a little offensive production to the 2nd line, and is good defensively. |

I agree. I don't foresee Botts making a trade where we end up essentially taking salary back in some way. We can't afford anything this year as we're right against the cap and I have a feeling Botts has ideas of where the money being freed up after this year is going to go. I just can't imagine him making a trade like that at this point. - HonkFortheGoose
Yeah, but...
Botts would be familiar with him from his time in Pittsburgh. This trade is sending out $4m and bringing back $3.5m (which will be on LTIR for now). The $3.5m for two more years is probably a good price compared to going to free agency to replace Sheary, Sobotka, Girgs, Larsson, Erod or Vesey. Likely 3 or 4 of those guys will need to be replaced. Replacing any of these guys with a 2 time Cup winner who's 27 and making $3.5m wouldn't be a bad idea. |

I think he's been getting closer, so it would be nice for him to get rewarded. |

Basically getting a 3rd round pick for Scandella if they did that trade for Rust. Not saying I would do it, but opens up a spot for Montour in the process |

This is the part that I don't think Botts would want to do to be honest. |

There's zero need to create cap space for this year. I highly doubt Botterill becomes a rental guy, which means if he brings in a few million, he'll ship some out. |

Does/will/can/should Montour even play the left side if/when he returns? |

Is he a problem though? Not sure who he played with most of the time last season, but he was 7th in points and 3rd for EV goals playing 15 minutes a night. He didn't play PP, but averaged 2 minutes a game killing penalties adding 2 shorthanded goals. Also 5th on the team in hits and is only 27. - adambuffalo
I just think it's a really bad idea to commit a lot of salary to 15 goal scorers. We already have Sheary and Vesey at cheaper deals. I'd rather plug a young 900k guy into is spot.
Spending 4.5 mil for a Johansson who can drive play makes a ton of sense. I'd commit money to a player like Ehlers, or even Kapanen from the leafs.
Think of it this way, would you rather have Rust and Vesey (let's say he resigns) for about 7-7.5 million, or get a 900k kid who might be as good as them and then sign a guy for 6 or so that can actually make a huge impact.
Rust is an alright player, but then I want to see all this cap space go to something better than alright. |

I'd rather have Bjugstad than Rust. Rust reminds me of a slightly tougher Sheary.
Theres an obvious injury factor with bjugstad but his ability to play center is nice and his size is a nice bonus. |

I think the Pegula's had a lot to learn as owners. Look at TM versus Botteril. Who was more fun to listen to? Who got you more excited about the moves he was making? Now look at Rex Ryan, everything he says is exciting. We were #2, but I'm used to being #1! Hells yah. McDermott is the most boring man alive after the Hoodie.
As new owners, they did interviews, and they hired dynamic exciting people. They were also new to sports and didn't probably have the best guidance. Terry in particular seemed to just want to hire sabres greats to run the organization. After a few bad hires, they seemed to try to find really sound people and turned control over to them.
Anyway, do we all agree the next two games are huge? We don't need to win, but I need to see this team look really superior to these bottom feeders. If they can come out and dominate play and throw up some lopsided shots, it will really prove they've moved up a class. I'm excited to find out how they look. - matty12345
The Caps only outshot the Rangers by 5 last week
Does that mean they aren’t in that upper class of teams bc they didn’t “dominate play” based on shots on goal??

Dude. If you are going to cherry pick one matchup to try to make a point, don't pick that one.
For the record, it was 6 more shots, which is quite a bit. The rangers also blocked 9 more shots, so the corsi was skewed even further. The Capitals also had considerably better scoring chances and blew them out 5-2.
So yeah, the caps are good.
We could also talk about how they gave up 43 shots to Vancouver or got outshot by 16 by the coyotes or 27-21 by the oilers, or how even Ottawa outshot them by 2. Or how Winnipeg outshot them by 15.
Good grief is right. |

Not speaking about any player in particular. Talking about what he does at or before deadline, generally. |

Lots of things to say here.
1) they out attempted them by 17
2) they were ahead the entire game, meaning score effects
3) the caps have a benefit of the doubt that the sabres do not. if the caps had a clunker against the rangers i'm more likely to call it an outlier than if the sabres did, where i'd be thinking okay maybe we aren't there yet |
