Canucks PP is converting at 38% since Hughes joined the 1st unit full time

Is it possible anymore to find defencemen like Weber, Letsng, Ekholm, Slavin, Parayko, Muzzin mid 2nd round or later?
Looking at the players drafted past the 45th spot. I really don't see any young players that have that same quality the ones mentioned above.
A couple young like Severson, Dunn, Klingberg but I wouldn't consider these guys as good as the ones mentioned above. |

Sounds the same as someone who said Niku is a game changer for Jets defence. |

It would be nice to find a player like Makar. Need JB to nab a chabot, McAvoy somewhere in the mid to later first. |

Need a larger sample size before we can say that it's no longer possible. A couple of those guys you listed were drafted in 2012 and it's too soon to judge the kids drafted over the past couple of drafts so really you're left with a 4-5 year sample size here. |

Some flyers fan did a big report on it but it was if you weren't considered a top line defender by 22, it was extremely rare you become one later.
2012 draft was 7 years ago. |

Yeah, I've read a few articles busting the "dmen need time to develop" myth.
Apparently it used to be somewhat true back before the cap era, but is no longer true at all. Combination of teams wanting ELC's on their team that can contribute + league moving toward more of a finesse speedy style of game + kids just being better prepared when coming into the league now.
But I assume that it still holds somewhat true for later round picks, no? Usually late round prospects almost have to go through the AHL even if they develop really well since being drafted. Meanwhile a 1st round pick who has a strong camp typically gets a shot to be on the NHL team unless the team is loaded at his position. |

In terms of #1 D, I wouldn't say there is 30 of them around the league. There has to be though. I think in terms of quality of D is just overrated around in the league.
Teams have definitely smartened up and are picking potential good D much higher than they used to be.
I still think D need more time to develop than forwards but doesn't mean they can't play in the NHL but lesser minutes, easier situations.
I was reading an article that Euro D picked later in the draft has a higher percentage than a NA player to make it to the NHL because of development time. |
