Here's the actual stat: the Blackhawks have 1 shot on goal in the last 23:50.

Maybe it's just me — I tend to be a little unconventional — but when I'm going up against a goaltender with a sub-.900 save percentage over the past season-plus, I usually try to have more than three shots on goal through 26 minutes.

And, I'm sorry, after seeing the 12-17=88 line touted as the 2nd coming and hearing how much Kane LOVES to play with them on all the media sites and by a lot of people on this board, I'm not seeing it.

Every time I pay close attention tonight, all I'm seeing is missed passes. Why does everyone keep insisting it's the answer? (genuine question, as I truly cannot remember how they did together last year).

However, we put 19 and 88 (who I do remember having a good year together last year) on a line and we get two bing-bang-goals right out of the gate.

- pdx2ord

There is almost no cooperation between the line mates. When the puck is dumped in there is no one even close to retrieving it. When it is carried in no one is setting up for a shot.

Trotz

Time warp or not, it works.

- Return of the Roar

Trotz uses man to man coverage.

“The Specifics of Trotz’s Defensive System

It isn’t a solid enough analysis to say that the Islanders defense has played solidly because they have Trotz as a coach. The specifics of the system and the way it runs need to be understood in order to grasp why the Islanders’ defense is so solid, which is what will be explained in detail in this section.

Defense First: This concept is pretty simple, that defense is the number one priority on this team. The defense should never crumble or break down, as maintaining defensive composure and stability consistently is the most important piece to the puzzle.

Tough Angle Shots: One thing the Islanders’ defense is stellar at is not allowing many opportunities from the slot. This is a relatively basic idea, but it is crucial to maintaining that defensive composure. The defensemen on the Islanders do an exemplary job of driving players to the wall, and outside of high percentage scoring areas. This forces the opposition to try to take a low quality shot on net, which the netminder should be able to keep aside.

Conservative Playing Style: The Islanders’ defensemen don’t like to take many risks. The defensemen very rarely pinch in the offensive zone, with the exception of an occasional famous Pelech pinch. “Playing it safe” is a good thing in terms of defense. Why would you want to potentially give up a goal when you don’t have to?

Man-on-Man Coverage: This applies particularly to the defensive zone. The Islanders’ defensemen do not lose the man they are covering often, and this elementary concept doesn’t allow the opposition to create time or space for themselves, therefore leading to a smaller amount of quality chances against.

Defensive-Minded Forwards: This is a big one. Having a solid defensive core is great, but if the forwards don’t have any defensive awareness, that leaves only two defensively competent players in the zone. If this were the case, the defensemen would be heavily outnumbered, making it a much tougher task to keep pucks out of the net.”

This is a joke, another absolute wood shed. Is this team THIS bad, THIS lowly talented?

They last week or so I've been watching I can not recall a team this bad. It was so horrible against LA I cut if off. I am soon doing that here, because this is madness. they don't even look like they are an NHL team.

It won’t be long before the Hawks hit their stride and start getting 10 shots per game and allowing less than 40. Just you want and see...

At this pace, SOGs on will be 40-6, Seabrook is far from the major problem here. This is sick.
- kwolf68

No, Seabrook isn't THE major problem - he is merely one of the major problems. Seabrook still does some good things but one thing he has been terrible at for a few years is bobbling the puck away in the the d-zone or not being able to pick the puck off the boards cleanly or making a wimpy pass that does not end up on a teammate's stick. Seabrook can get in passing lanes and block shots well but his puck handling is terrible.

This team is pathetic. Just boil it down to that. Either the talent is bad or the coaching is. Period. Another game like THIS? Can't be real.

This heavy dump and chase style has to go. Sorry but the Hawks aren’t built for it. It also is easy to defend since d-men are allowed to interfere and grab again. This would’ve been effective 4-5 years ago post strike when d-men couldn’t touch a forward and just had to turn and skate.

Sharks just taking full advantage of this crap man to man system too. Tons of picks and screens. Hawks have no idea who is supposed to cover who or when to pass off the puck career.

Keep pounding a square peg in a round hole. It will work eventually.....Hawks dump and chase strategy just ensures even more time pinned in our own zone.

A misread of the text. When a forward comes into the area a defender is in, the defender controls the play in the area they are responsible for. They don’t play man to man at all.

I’ve had a pretty open mind about him up until now. One or two of these performances per year I can sort of understand. If they are exhausted or a bug is going through the team. They have had 4 games like this in the first 14.

I’m officially there, Colliton is a major part of the problem and likely needs to go. This team has talent. There is absolutely no understanding of what they need to do on the ice.

If this is what San Jose can do to the Hawks what will Vancouver do to them next game. Urgh...

This can’t go on much longer, if it does somebody will lose their job.

puck retrieval is putrid

What player on this team even has the size or speed to play dump and chase outside of maybe Saad? Who the f is supposed to retrieve the puck on a line of Dcat Strome Kane?

I get to watch the Dzone on TV and don’t even know what the poop is going on. Can’t imagine how confusing it is on the ice.

Is it dump and chase - or not being able to make a couple of direct passes to move the puck up ice?
