Alright. Grapes is right and the slave-holding pederast ancient Greeks would be appalled at the current state of 21st century canadian immigration policy
Someone text me when Botterill wakes up - jcragcrumple
I think you will be waiting a while for that text. Getting the feeling that, again, this year is not about playoffs but building a team. |

I'm not going to base my thoughts of modern immigration policy on the 2400 year old immigration policies of the Greek city states any more than I would base it on Don Cherry's ramblings.
As for the societal values, the Greeks had slaves and I'm not gonna even get into their LGBTQ views, which would make Mayor Pete throw up - jcragcrumple
Maybe you should, considering that a society/civilization, has never, in recorded human history, survived mass immigration from 3rd world countries.
Also your point on their LGBTQ views: this is just another lie/disinformation talking point peddled to the masses. Gays were not allowed to own land, serve in the military, hold political office, etc. |

clearly there are no facts here which is why people disagree. the context adds to the overall picture as to why the decision to fire him was made.
if you are choosing to plug your ears and scream NO CONTEXT ALLOWED, you must not have a very compelling argument - robz228
My argument is simple and has yet to be refuted: I have listened to the comments - IN CONTEXT - on video and I have read them. They don't offened me, and I cannot understand how a reasonable person could be offended by them.
I have asked repeatedly why they are offensive, and have yet to be told why. I have been insulted at least twice for telling people their definition of offensive being "that's offensive" is unacceptable. You, in fact are one of those people who resorted to insults. your definition of insult seem to be whatever you need it to be at the time. |

I thought the immigration topic was bad, but I can't think of a topic I'd like to discuss less on a hockey forum than ancient opinions on homosexuality and how you think it relates to today. Holy (frank). The latter is my own doing I guess |

He was told to tone it down and didn't. It really doesn't have to be any more complicated than that. |

The context of "You people" and the definition of using it is to create another category of people distinct from the whole. That whole is Canada, and the you people is the category of people that Cherry defined, those that come to Canada and enjoy OUR way of life. The inclusion of our way of life phrase is exclusionary of the You people category he created. Hence, why people took it as offensive to those that came to Canada, or as they're known, immigrants.
All that being said I wouldn't fire him for his opinon as I would like to see our larger cultural shift towards punishing those who disagree with us stop. |

You're either for free speech, or against it imo. I find calling for corporations to be the arbiters of free speech to be repugnant. At least it's something I might expect from a Republican. What's new(at least in Western countries) is that the people screaming for "safety" from speech are leftists now. I find that fact to be deeply troubling (particularly when compared to some rather obvious historical parallels). I think Liberals need to get on this problem and frank it right in the statist mouth-hole. I even heard Kamala Harris advocating for school until 6PM, apparently in order for their parents to be better able to service the state. Don't tell me you're "fighting the establishment" or whatever these children believe, and then openly advocate for statist policies. Good grief. |

I think this is why people are concerned about both parties, I'm more Libertarian/Conservative which means I probably have very different views than you, but the state should be no where near legislating the stuff they currently are. I have no right to impose what I believe upon you nor you me. |

It's not a free speech issue and there is no need to make it into a political debate. If they didn't like what he was saying on their airwaves then they have every right to get rid of him. He knew where they stood on the issue. |

Advocating for corporations to be the arbiters of free speech is corporatist, statist, and fascist. If you find yourself doing the above, those descriptors apply to you. IMHO. The political bent of the people pushing this corporatism does nothing but reinforce my point. I will mark you down as in favor of terminating the employment of any NFL player that kneels for the anthem. |

Everyone has free speech - that doesn't mean that there aren't consequences. He was told to knock this kind of stuff off because - while on their airwaves - he is to talk about hockey. That's the job. If I walk into the lunchroom and start badmouthing the owner of my company I will probably be fired. It would be false to say that my free speech was violated.
And the comparison to the kneeling NFL players is ridiculous. Not at all the same thing. |

There are also levels of getting offended, though, that are tolerable, and those that aren't. It's one thing for the girl to get offended (though probably not all would) and call you an bumhole. It would be another if she got so worked up, went to a manager, and demand that you be removed from the facility. We all know that in today's day and age, both kinds exist in spades. - buffalofan19
Very true. I didn’t think about her getting offended and taking it to that level. But people are crazy and would do that. Depending on the person.

Bad-mouthing your boss at work is not the same as corporations controlling every public platform in the internet era, and deciding what is to be considered "right-think". |

But, at the same time, though, they do have a right to terminate you for doing something that damages their brand, especially while you are working for them. If I'm a FedEx Delivery driver, and I slap a "Make America Great Again" bumper sticker on the truck I make deliveries in (or one for whoever the Democratic Candidate is going to be), FedEx has every right to fire me. Whether it's because they don't like my political stance, or they don't want to show one at all doesn't change this.
In your example with the NFL kneelers, these players are taking a stance while exhibiting the NFL's brand, and while working for them. It's the same thing. Do they have a right to do it? Yes. Is it a good idea? Not necessarily. |
