It was obviously the point he was trying to get across. The entire rant was about supporting the troops and buying poppies. The throw away was "you people" and "come to Canada". You people is not a racial slur and he never singled out any particular race. He also mentioned young people. Does that make him ageist as well?

And this is coming from a kid of the 80s who had like every Rock 'em Sock 'em VHS ((frank) I think I had the first one in Betamax ).

He's alienated European hockey players -- both on television and when he hilariously didn't play any European players on his Ice Dogs teams in the early 2000s (I think set set the all-time losing OHL record or something) -- not to mention Francophone players his entire (frank)ing career.

Yeah, that's great that Cherry wanted to support the troops and be a patriotic Canadian, but ironically, all his statements did over the years was undermine the very ideals upon which they were founded: freedom and being Canadian to me (and a lot of others) means acceptance and understanding of different cultures, languages, and religions.

Over the years I actually thought he was more right than wrong when it came to the actual (frank)ing thing he was on the (frank)ing TV for (icing, dump-ins, getting out of the way of shots/screening goalies, the stop sign on the sweaters, etc.), but no, he had to use it as his personal soapbox to rant about unrelated things.

What is it that makes him an icon? He was a lousy coach and a boring commentator. SN was looking to dump him along with their other high priced on-air types and he gave them the opportunity. I haven’t watched his routine for years
