Come on man.
Its obvious don't be that guy. Cherry even said he knew what he said and isn't apologizing for it.
He was directing it at immigrants and that is not up to debate. sorry. - Santo_44
To be clear though Canadians are all immigrants with the exception of our Indigenous communities. Unless of course if you wish to claim that British and French Settlers are not immigrants. |

Cherry should have worded it differently if that was the message he was trying to get across. It had a racist tone.. Pointing your finger at a camera and saying "you people come here".. - PatC80
He's 80 someing years old. I don't think he knows how to word it either way right or wrong. Plus pointing at the camera means he was talking to everyone who was watching not one specific race.
I'm a white freckled ginger who a lot of you make fun of all the time on here. Do I take that personal and want half of you guys fired from your job. Hell no cuz I'm not a whiney Bytch ( no offense to all the whiney and or bytches I know) and don't take things personally.

I understand that he was referring to immigrants and I also don't think there is anything wrong with the sentiments that immigrants should purchase poppies to support the troops. The fact is that immigrants are not a race. Canadian immigrants are made up of all different races. If anything it was a nationalist sentiment more than a racist sentiment. Racist or racism is just a trigger word. It's like referring to everyone who disagrees with you as a nazi. I've disagreed with Don Cherry alot over the years and thought he was well past his best before date. I just disagree that this was a racist diatribe. Maybe it's semantics but in a world of policing speech and thoughts I think it's an important distinction. |

SN wanted him fired.
I don't think anyone on here is screaming for him to be fired, just simply stating what he said was stupid and wrong. |

saw a native guy using the "You people" phrase sarcastically yesterday to give poop to people calling Canada a white country where visible minority should act "white" . Many posters didn't clue in his was native (his profile is pretty clear he is), he told one of the posters...I didn't come to a white country, the white man came to my country. |

"you people" is and has been a hateful and discriminating thing to say for years.
That is all fine and dandy that you think its ok, however society knows it is wrong.
SN can not stand for this and they fired him. |

Generally when people say 'you' it means you don't consider yourself one and the same. People say 'we' when they're talking about a collective that they belong to. It's pretty easy to distinguish when someone is othering. |

Sportsnet is reacting to an inordinate number of phone complaints about the comment Cherry made. Cherry is 85 years old and he is probably as popular as he is disliked. I did not care for Coaches Corner, but I would be much happier if they gave Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson the boot instead.

But the sentiment should've been, "hey I don't see a lot of poppies out there. Go buy some poppies and support the troops...".
That would've been fine; that would've actually been something to rally around, because nobody is buying poppies, that's the problem. |
