it's whataboutism and it's what people resort to when they cannot defend the actions or words of the person whose side they're on.

I find it amusing that the side preaching tolerance, inclusion, diversity, etc. is intolerant to someone else's comments and opinions that differ from theirs.
- garbow

what are you talking about? this wasn't Don Cherry giving his opinion on something. this was Don Cherry deliberately singling out immigrants as not being supportive of Canada's veterans for doing the same thing that millions and millions of native-born Canadians do, which is not wear poppies. if i had the same public outburst in my place of work, i'd be fired too.

Overall nice post EK.

I agree with the following "I am an American and my country is bitterly and disgustedly divided right now. On issues like immigration, health care and climate change people I know, good people, forget their logic and simply pull on a Republican or Democratic jersey... No matter what "team" you are for, the divisiveness is awful and Canada knows this is happening down here".

We need to start seeing beyond left and right as this is only meant to have us fight and argue with each other.

In saying that, not sure I agree with the following as someone who lives in the Greater Toronto Area "Canada continues to believe strongly in embracing immigrants and when you walk around Toronto or Vancouver you truly see a melting pot with well-dressed business people of all nationalities working side-by-side and making huge contributions".

It seems that way but we have a long way to go still. Lots of division still exists between people who all stem from different cultures and hold different cultural values and beliefs (this includes Canadian culture as well). It may be a step in the right direction but again, still a long way to go.

Agreed, hate this Left and right bull poop as well as liberal and conservative. People out there live and breathe their political beliefs and that is ridiculous. It happens often where legitimate views or beliefs are dismissed just because they came from someone with Conservative, Republican, Liberal beliefs ect. A good idea is a good idea I dont care who you are. Even an idiot like Donald Trump has a good idea every once in a while. Judge the idea not the mouth it comes from.

I'm pretty sure if you went back and watched coaches corner you find Don saying You People hundreds of times he uses that term frequently.

Exactly! 'You people think that fighting should be out of the game but I guarantee you it leads to more slashing, high sticking and liberties taken with star players".

He screwed up and said it in the wrong context.

That was your best blog of the year EK, imo you totally nailed it. I believe SN gave Don Cherry a chance to apologize and his refusal got the firing. Don's comment was wrong in hindsight but you know this guy is my idol. I love 99 percent of what he says because he is old school right in most cases. Unfortunately when he blows it he blows it big time. Sad to see him go and because he was truly entertaining. I said the same thing when Dave Hodge left HNIC but Ron over the years has adequately replace him. Life goes on and DC will always be special no matter what he says. I mean at 85 he is totally sane but we all have brain cramps.

Only in Canada do we hold a sports commentator more accountable than our own Prime Minister.

This is embarrassing for me as a Canadian.
Don Cherry has had a pulpit on a publicly funded, national broadcaster for over 30 years, spewing bigotry and intolerance for anyone who isn't Canadian. Or, more correctly anyone who doesn't fit his definition of what a Canadian is.
Now we have unchecked outrage because he got what he's had coming for over a decade?
Where was all this passion 3 weeks ago when we got about 50% of the country out to the polls for a federal election????
Just because the guy likes hockey and supports our troops he can say whatever he wants? He's free to say whatever he wants, but people who fled the atrocities of war to come to Canada for a better life have no freedom to choose to wear a poppy or not? A lot of "these people" know what our troops endure more than the average Canadian.
And to boot, this stems from Cherry's OPINION of who is not wearing the poppy and why. The guy is so out of touch with society that he called Scott Sabourin's unfortunate injury "A concussion. No big deal." But, apparently he knows at a glance who is a recent immigrant and who might be a 1st or 2nd or 3rd generation Canadian and why they choose not to support the armed forces in this particular manner?

Except this time he clearly does mean Immigrants. "You people come to this country" is pretty self explanatory. It isnt really about saying you people either. It is about saying Immigrants are ungrateful to Canadian Vet sacrifices because they are foreign when you know damn well Canadian born citizens are guilty for the same thing.

*TRIGGERED* I don't agree with a number of things DC has said over the years, but his support of the troops is unwavering, warranted and highly commendable. your feelings mean squat next to the sacrifice made by our vets. suck it up, buttercup, or one day you may not enjoy the freedoms your're exercising.

No. He didn't say "you people." He said "you people come here and you love our milk and honey..." That is very obviously talking about recent immigrants. Calling it anything else is whitewash. Heavy on the White!

I would be fired at my work for saying it to, and I work on a military base. That's the confused old man part there, thinking he's doing the military a service. The military isn't exactly a champion for singling out immigrants...

What makes you so special that the world needs to change how they act to accommodate you? If you dont like the people in your neigbourhood, do you try to change everyone or do you move elsewhere to a neighbourhood that fits you better? You would move.

"You people." Our newest "racist term." It is the media's wet dream. No matter who says it, they can simply create their own narrative to make the biggest headline story possible.

White guy says it, he meant the blacks. Black guy says it, he meant the whites. Straight guy says it, he meant the gays. Gay guy says it, he meant the straights. Sexist guy says it, he meant the girls. Girl says it, she meant the guys.

Finally a term offensive enough, and ambiguous enough that it can literally mean anything, and everyone can be equally offended. Christmas has come early. Thank you Don Cherry.

BTW - I've been done with Cherry's decrepit old ass since he attacked Ovechkin for over celebrating. (Oh no, i just committed ageism by calling him decrepit.)

Good point. Fact of the matter is he's been bumbling, stumbling and tripping on his words due to age for a long time now even just talking about hockey stuff. Does he feel the way it came across, probably. Did he mean to say it that way, probably not.

He is not employed by HNIC to share his OPINION on Immigrants. He is a professional and needs to act like one. His actions reflect on his employers. This is not a new concept. Rosanne was cancelled because she made a racist comment and refused to apologize
