would you guys do this trade of Brendan Smith for Ilya Kovalchuk?

Kings retain 2 million of Kovalchuk's cap hit

they both have two years left on their deals

basically the money would stay the same as it is now, Rangers on the hook for like a 4.2 million cap hit, Kings still on hook for total of 6.2 million hit

I think the question is, would you rather have Brendan Smith playing forward the next two seasons at a 4.25 mil cap hit or Ilya Kovalchuk?

Well, when you put it like that, Ilya is the obvious choice although the ability to shift Smith back to D is more utilitarian. I also don't like his attitude and don't think he would be good for the room. Also, Smith on the 4th line is fine, where would Kovy fit?

Not a chance of Kovalphuck being of any use in a Rangers uniform while he finishes out his career.
And I think that if Smith keeps playing the way he has, he will be elsewhere by the time his contract is done, too.

Id rather have Smith honestly. He is an insurance policy if a Dman goes down during the game and he plays a 4 line game. Kovalchuck will have to play top line and PP minutes. Rather let kids flourish there.

well also, Brendan Smith is much easier to buyout this June if they choose to go that route, to me that's probably the biggest reason why I think I'd say no

this trade idea is definitely pooptier for Kings than Rangers though, paying 6.25 mil for Brendan Smith is awful

Smith has more use. I would rather go with 6 D than 5 if someone gets injured during a game. Plus Smith seems like a good lockeroom guy and I think that is important with how young the team is

I have an irrational hate for Kovalchuk. One of my favorite moments was Avery making him insane during the Thrashers playoff series.
