Boqvist and Mitchell play next year in Chicago? What about Beaudin and Gilbert? Running out of spots with players like Keith, Seabrook, de Haan, Murphy, and Maatta still on long-term deals.
Don't see a lot of those players overly tradeable sadly!! - ChicagoHope
20-21... Boqvist and Mitchell in, Gus and 4K out
Beaudin and Gilbert likely 1st and 2nd callups Seabs should be 7D.
21-22 one of Murphy, DeHaan, Maata lost in the expansion draft, making room for either Beaudin and Gilbert.
22-23 Another veteran traded by then making room for another prospect.
In these ensuing 3 years, possibly one of these D prospects gets moved (ala Joki) for a forward asset.

Don’t think de Haan, Murphy & Maatta have NMC. All 3 could be moved this season, and would have plenty of suitors if made available. This summer too. |

Murphy, Matta, DaHaan all tradeable after end of season, not saying they should be or are, just saying there are options. |

Hawks need some veteran D depth in the near future. They can't go with an aging 2 and 7 and five kids as their defense corps if they move all 3 of Maatta, Murphy, DeHaan. Could see them moved eventually or lost to expansion over the next few years to make room for the prospects, but I think the transition from old to young will take place over time. |

I don’t disagree. Just saying, there is flexibility with those three, and there are willing takers on the other end, especially to teams pushing for the playoffs, if the Hawks don’t drag themselves into contention. |

I hear ya. Hawks do have some tradeable deadline assets if not in playoff contention at the TDL. These assets don't have to be limited to D though.
Would Crow waive his NTC to go to a contender if it's apparent the Hawks won't resign him?
Is someone like Shaw or Saad expendable at the TDL?
Getting ahead of myself here. Hope the Hawks pick up the pace and start accumulating points so we don't have to worry about this scenario. |

Good question. I posted this last night in the previous blog. Just a sample roll out schedule of D prospects over the next 6 years:
2019-20: Boqvist
2020-21: Mitchell, one of Gilbert or Carlsson
- subtract Gustafsson, Koekkoek
2021-22: Beaudin, Krys
- subtract 2 of de Haan, Murphy, Maatta
2022-23: Galvas
- subtract whoever of de Haan, Murphy, Maatta didn't depart the year prior
2023-24: Vlasic
- subtract Keith (contract expires, retires)
2024-25: Regula
- subtract Seabrook (contract expires, retires)
Not all 8 will make it. I'm guessing at least half of them will stick long term. Some could be serviceable for a season or two before being moved for other options.
This also doesn't take into account the expansion draft, future draft picks, free agents, and trade acquisitions. |

As much as I love Seabs, I wish his boat anchor of a contract could be bought out, LTIRed or traded at a reasonable cost within a couple of year to make room for a prospect.

The buyout option doesn't save much cap space in 3 of the 4 remaining years:
2020/21 - save $300K
2021/22 - save $3.3M
2022/23 - save $300K
2023/24 - save $1.8M
Then they also have $700K on their cap for 4 more years after that: 2024/25 - 2027/28.

Great post. I also liked your previous one with an example roll out schedule for D prospects.
You’re right that it’s still critical to have a balance of veterans and youngsters. Eventually the older and/or more experienced youngsters will be the veterans. |

Good point. I was thinking that those numbers are reduced if the buy out occurs a couple of years down the road

I would think so, but surprisingly not so much.
Buyout date 6/15/2021:
2021/22 - save $3.2M
2022/23 - save $167K
2023/24 - save $1.7M
Buyout date 6/15/2022:
2022/23 - save $416K
2023/24 - save $1.9M

Thanks for researching that. Maybe in a couple of years after a new TV contract is negotiated and the subsequent increase in the cap, a couple of mil won't make much difference.

Nature abhors empty cap space.
Cap hits will expand to fill up to the cap ceiling.
GMs will quickly sign players to new contracts that put them as close to the cap as they are now. They can't help themselves. That's why there is a cap to begin with. |

The more think about it, I agree that Boqvist will be returned to Rockford upon Murphy's return. 4K liks it or not will remain as 7D. With Boqvist and possibly Mitchell ready to step in next season, a couple of D are expendable.
4K would return something in the off season. Look what a 7D like Forsling and Forsberg brought last summer.
Gus would be expendable also, maybe at the
TDL. Not the 1st round pick that many hoped for last year, but maybe a lower pick or prospect. - boilermaker100
I am still not sold Mitchell will sign. Keep in mind if Denver makes the frozen 4 he will miss the end of the regular season. |

Crawford (the goalie, not the coach) seems to be looking to stick around for a while - from today's Tribune:
Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford and his wife, Kristy Muscolino, on Oct. 10 paid just under $4.1 million for a four-bedroom, 4,835-square-foot penthouse condominium on the eighth floor of the Hayden West Loop building on the Near West Side. |

Toews is playing better, still one of the best centers in the league, possession stats improving
Wasn’t sure what JC was doing with the lines to start the year
JC finally went back to the proven line combos
JC is safe because Hawks don’t like to admit mistakes
Best goaltending tandem in the league
Absolutely have a shot at playoffs with great goaltending and high scoring offense
Hawks are stuck in the mushy middle of the standings until the kids mature or the legacy contracts come off the books |

I believe that Bowman will consider trading prospects and a high draft choice for something of little value - like a late future draft pick if Seattle takes Seabrook. I do not think they would go this route with Keith. Seattle is going to be able.to hold many teams hostage with a precarious position NHL teams face. At this moment iexpect that Seattle might be capable of outshing the results Vegas attained..it will be a buyers market |
