Won’t be necessary. He’s being released apparently. So unless a team has to honor his contract details he probably will he had for cheap, that is if he stays in the NHL.
- Rinosaur

He'll get waived but probably won't have to report to the AHL

The Kings will still be on the hook for his cap hit (minus 1 million) and salary, The buyout window is closed and he can't just sign with another team for "cheap"

I didnt even know releasing was a thing in the NHL haha....I cant recall other releases, can you?

Its one of the things I really respect about the NFL...that they can just cut a player from the team any time they want. I think it should be like this in all sports because I believe the team/player to be employer/employee.

I cannot. There’s probably some different rules for players above a certain age.

Yeah thats what I was thinking because I cant recall for the life of me hearing the term "releasing" regarding a player in the NHL before.

They can "mutually agree" to terminate his contract, but he won't be eligible to play in the NHL until next season. He would however, be able to go and play in Europe and he wouldn't see a dollar from the Kings

He's better off waiting for a buyout this summer unless he has a comparable offer for the rest of the season and next in the KHL

My feeling is that he'd bolt back to the KHL if given the opportunity.

He's about to get paid not to play. If he plays a game of chicken with the Kings, he can get bought out, get paid and still go back to the KHL and probably get paid again

Galchenyuk will finish the year well ahead of Simons point totals.

Honestly they might be neck and neck.

LeBrun: My understanding of the Kovalchuk situation at this hour: still no firm decisions taken, more discussions to take place today between his camp and LA. The 35-and-over contract really limits the options. Trade is best scenario after the Dec. 15 bonus paid. But is there a market?

So not being released, at least not yet.

Simon will have at least 10 more points than Galchenyuk. The dude looks completely lost.

I haven’t paid any attention to him since he came back. Is still any good at this point?

Galch missed most of training camp and preseason plus half the games of this season. I'm not ready to trade him yet. Plus the team is playing pretty f'n solid despite the constant revolving door of players injured, lines shuffling and him only having 3 A's in 9 games.

Other notable mid to high level wingers that didnt perform to expectation at first with Pens:

Kessel: 59 points in 82 games...lowest production of his career.

Neal: 6 points in 20 games.

I'm willing to be much more patient.

- MattStrat

Sid and Geno were both injured when Neal arrived, and then on top of that they didn't play him with Staal. He was playing with the ghost of Kovalev lol. I don't even recall who his center was.

Edit: Letestu

9 points in 17 games, idk the fancy stats. I would think at best if he were here, he could help the PP with that one timer.

Sounding like a release is not likely.

You kind of want more though when a guy is poor defensively, possession, and makes 6M.

So apparently the Blues just signed Brouwer and McGinn to PTOs. Word is they really really want more leadership in the locker room. Sounds like it’ll be one guy or the other who sticks, not both

LA would retain salary no doubt and he is fine defensively.

Haha so they win a cup then need leadership. That makes complete sense to me

For those who have suggested a release. Kovalchuk would have to either breach or walk away from his contract in order for LA to terminate the agreement. Can’t see it happening. Kings would still take the cap charge as he’s over 35.

Toffoli would be an ok pick up if the price is right. He wouldn't really fix the PP or anything like that, but he'd be a decent top 6 wing that fits the system and could score 20 goals.
