Its funny, youve got the dreggers of the world acknowledging the comments made by button that the team has looked kind of bad since last xmas... but at the start of the season EVERYONE of the TSN crew minus craig button had the leafs a shoe in for the playoffs and a contender. Button was one of the only guys to say the leafs would fight for the wildcard spot.
At the end of the day if the leafs miss the playoffs, what does this say about the hockey experts. People are going to make mistakes. But its only now that the experts are talking about the warts of the team that have been there for everyone to see since last year? Terrible....
Anyone that said the leafs would fight for a playoff spot based on the hard evidence was called a troll or what ever else you can fit in there by almost every leaf fan on the planet.
This is one thing you could chalk up, that you could see coming!
I like lots of this team, its a fun team to cheer for despite my favorite team, but now that the proof is in the pudding, the rose colored glasses and the homer takes by supposed pros i hope calms down. The jeff oneils of the world will never admit it, but his take on how the leafs would do was based on his love for the team and not any sound credible take.
Hate to say it, but button looks like a hockey savant. |

a lot to unpack here.
But at the moment there is still 60 games to play.
the Leafs are exactly 1 point from 2nd in their Division.
I get the need to jump on and claim Victory..but a lot can happen still |

Rumour has it Kyle is looking to add Tessa Virtue into the org.
Unsure if it's as a top 6 winger? Or to coach our forwards how to spin away from contact |

Agreed that he has to play the players he's given, but would it hurt to experiment a little? Again, maybe Dermott might be a top 4 capable player? I don't think Holl is suddenly anything more than a 6/7 either, but what's that definition of insanity again? We know what Ceci is at this point, over his head. - leafsfann
Holl has been the team's best RHD this year, and possible the third best D overall. He should absolutely be given a chance to fail in the top-4.
That said, the problem with the team is not Cody Ceci. Ceci is +2 at 5v5, which means that he is providing marginal value. Morgan Rielly has been poor. I don't think it's because "he's covering for Ceci" that he routinely loses the puck or has it skip over his blade or makes a poor decision. Rielly has to be better. He's the elite star of the blue line, and he hasn't been.
Tyson Barrie has not played like Tyson Barrie. I think he's being restrained. I can't fathom why. Let him just GO. He will a bunch of terrible boneheaded plays in his own zone, but he will more than offset those with good offensive play and offensive zone control and generating offensive opportunities. By constraining him all you get is defensive boneheaded plays over and over again with no upside.
Overall, though, the team is still not figuring out how to support each other properly. I must have watched 6 times yesterday where the defenseman retrieved the puck in the corner, and made a soft pass to the outlet winger standing still on the half wall - and the winger continued to stand there and wait for the puck rather than go get it. In all cases a pinching Islander took the puck away.
They aren't playing to their strength consistently - which is using and generating speed, and that basically means not standing still. For moments in yesterday's game when they were moving, they looked really good. But this year's Leaf team hasn't figured out how to get and keep moving. |

There are some great hockey fans that comment here, and for sure you can spot the people drinking the koolaid, its just frustrating.
I hate that a publicly/privately funded sports station(s) (cbc,SN and tsn) have so many fans employed vs people that will tell it like it is. you are only doing a disservice to impressionable fans by saying something so that they hear something good, vs hearing the truth.
The leafs are never analysed with the same harshness or disdain that teams like the habs, flames or ott get. Personally i like hearing the hard news about my favorite team, but when both team share the same similarities in deficiencies and one fan base get the rose colored approach and the others, the truth, its frustrating.
The habs are not the best team in the league... but based of some crazy voodoo magic the " experts" had them barely making the playoffs based on last years results... but the leafs with 3 points more... were contenders....
what do they base their opinions on?
Btw the habs this year are the most balanced scoring team in 40 years.... you could see them develop that because Julien changed up his system last year to fit the players that bergy brought in...
evolve or get the boot! |

Trust me, if there is a team that has the talent to turn it around, its the leafs. but some changes might need to be kade, ( my thinking its systems, not personell wholly)
I'm more pissed to see these highly lauded insiders and pros do the backstep and head scratch to something that so many people could say from day one of this year...
I said matthews was proabbly a terrible leader and has a thin backbone and ate crow. I got roasted...
You still want that guy as captain after seeing his 20 games so far this year? Hell to the no!
Objectivity will give you less heart ache and anger if we practice it more. Hearing all the pros say matthews should be captain... was hard to listen to. Once they commit to a narrative, its god damn nearly impossible for them to change their tune. They'll argue it to death at the expense of looking silly for it. Frustrating to have to be subjected to it...
