Do you recall when Don Cherry ripped the Leafs for trading Wendel Clark to Quebec for Sundin? - PatC80
Yup.
I am convinced he would give Ritchie Nylanders contract and swap them in a heartbeat. |

I have been going back and watching old Cherry clips, because for a long time I was cool with his shtick, until maybe 5 or so years ago maybe longer..the quality of his analysys really nose dive...But after watching the old clips, I think I was fine overlooking a lot of stuff because he wrapped everything in a pro-Canadian blanket.
But you can be pro Canadian and not put down others - senstroll
I'm late to this party, but I would just comment that I always felt with Cherry, you had to pick the parts that were good and toss away the rest.
Like a druncle or a racist grandparent . . . they are there, and they are spouting, and you toss so much noise out - because you can't upset the family at Christmas - but in the end they still have value in some of the things they say, and you take from those.
His positions on touch-icing, hitting from behind, playing tough with respect for the other player (which actually did evolve a bit, but not enough over time), how to absorb a body check, child hockey safety and awareness, all Emergency Services personnel and the armed forces were all very good messages.
His positions on most other things should have been dismissed.
The problem is that most people aren't good at disseminating the message and tossing out the bad parts.
Edit: This last paragraph is not to say that it's okay to say divisive things if people can separate the messages; there's no room for it. The last paragraph is really intended to note that while you can say good things, if you're embedding bad things in that message, your message is corrupted. |

I think for tonight Spezza is probably the 3rd line C. Shore would be a 4th line winger with the Goat and Timashov.
Maybe I'm too charitable - I haven't thought Spezza looked that bad when pressed into 3C duty. He's not fast and he's not defensive - but he is decent at getting the puck, being where he needs to be, and making passes. He's made some plays. The game where he took two penalties, I still don't even fault him. One was a weak call, and the other he was trying to lift a stick and caught a guy with a high stick. At least he battling and not being lazy. |

Kerfoot out indefintely?
This team this year...I dunno. While Babs is frustrating as a coach at times, the man does have some accomplishments. But not sure if is utilizing this roster correctly.
plus
We did move out, what 9 players it was, PLUS sub coaching staff.
We can hate on Mitchys contract but we are better with him than without, even if he's not living up to the 10 milly he is gettin.
While something may need to change, it cant be reactionary. Easily lookin like Babs at this point for some questionable decisions like ice times and goal tending...mind you Freddy is a bit more up and down this year. |

I think so too. I bet it's the same for Hutchinson, he probably asked to be waived or traded..

In theory (THEORY) this could be good. Last year they were healthy and they had a bunch of guys who were scoring a lot, which I think led to a lot of team complacency.
The Leafs need to evolve their play into a consistent style that defines their identity. It sounds like buzzwords when I read it initially, but 3 years ago, I recall opposing coaches talking about how the Leafs used their team speed to play a pressure D that forced the offense into moving the puck, while using their speed to pick off passes and block lanes and recipients. This turned into an up tempo transition game, which is how the Leafs had been so successful.
This year we don't see this. The D is too passive. The forwards are too stationary. We started to see some of it in spurts last game against the Islanders, but there were missed assignments several times. If one guy moves to pressure another guy has to fill the gap, and you can't void your responsibility to fly the zone (i.e., Muzzin and Barrie). *IF* they play the way they did against the Islanders, and smooth the responsibility gaffes, it's a huge step towards being who they need to be to have success.
The absence of guys like Marner (or Tavares) should be teaching the Leafs that they have the skill to win when everyone is healthy, but they also have the game plan and skills to win when they execute their plan, even without everyone. |
