I hate the idea Lou would be so much better in contracts. He's been horriblel for years with contracts. The islanders right now easily have a worse cap situation than the Leafs.

While Lou may have saved $ on the big names, he would have signed a 4th line for 13 million with contracts you can't trade while doing so. Dubas would have been destroyed giving a washed-up 33 year-old 4 years at 3 million per on the 4th line (Komorov).

This Leafs team has had to deal with injuries to front line players. Depth is no longer their strength and playing .500 till Marner gets back might be the best they can hope for. A strong 2nd half might get them the second wild card spot and then who knows once the playoffs start

Leafs can easily be a contender with a new coach. The talent is there already. The issue is they have a coach not playing the best lineup and a system which makes zero sense.

Firing Babcock makes a massive difference.

Coach has a ton of impact but we also had Toews, Pulock, Pelech, and Leddy in place when he took over. You need the horses on the back end the Leafs defense is let’s say limited. They’re also soft.

You honestly think those D are better than what the Leafs have right now?

Babs does have shortcomings that we saw in his time here in Detroit. He is egotistical, and can get tunnel vision on players - good and bad. I won't get into details, but some of the roster / salary cap problems here were Babs' doing. Having said that, Shanny owns the problem in TO. His GM and coach want to do things totally different ways, and are definitely not on the same page. I will say that Babs is more likely right than Dubas. He has won everything, and knows how is needs to happen, and it won't with the roster he was dealt there. Dubas, on the other hand, has won nothing, and has yet to learn that stats and metrics don't necessarily win hockey games - people do. Toronto had a sub standard defense last season, and I am in awe of Dubas ability to make it worse - the players they added aren't known for their own zone defense and ability to keep the puck out of their own net, and that is what the TML's really needed. It will be interesting to see what Shanny's next move will be.
