I'm not a balls to the wall advanced stats guy. I do put a good amount stock into them, but there's a balance between that and good old eye test (what Grinder puts too much stock in). That being said, if a power ranking has a bottom feeder in the top 1/3 of the NHL I'm gonna call bullpoop. I get what jboyd pointed out, but I still think it's bullpoop to snapshot a couple of games to put together a list of the full NHL power ranks.

I am hardly an advanced stat guy, while I'll admit to finding a gem hiding in them at times. But what about Toronto, eh? All the muckety much about their GM being totally about advanced stats, and yet the Leafs totally suck. Are they in an extended tough stretch, or was too much emphasis placed on advanced stats, and not enough on other things... like chemistry... that can't be compiled and queried? Injuries is no excuse, as the Pens have shown.

To me the Leafs are a team that have all the pieces to be very effective but need a kick in the balls. I think this will happen when Babcock is fired.

Totally random and non-Pens related, but look at the west...

I had no idea Nashville fell from grace so fast. I wonder which West team is going to panic first and make a loony trade. I'm going put my money on either Calgary or Nashville.

I'd say MIN, but I don't think they're going to panic. I think they're riding it out and will let teams come to them this year before reevaluating in the off-season.

Yeah Rinne sucks. I watched him vs the Ads and he didn't even look like an AHL G.

On paper they appear to have all the pieces, but on the ice and in the locker room? I just don't know. They appear to be regressing with no end in sight. Beyond what I saw Saturday, that game has the hockey population north of the border in turmoil...

You may be the most consistent poster next to Grinder.

Would you guys do Kapanen for Jarry and a pick? With the thought Bjugstad and potentially Galchenyuk get moved.

I'd be all for the Kapanen trade but I cant see them moving him. He is one of the few guys they have signed up to a decent contract.

This Schultz for Barrie thing I'm not sure makes any sense unless there are other pieces. They are likely two of the same.

If we start talking Schultz, Jarry and something for Barrie and Kapanen I'm in.

I think Nylander would be the guy for the Leafs to move as they dont have a one year cap problem, they have a multi year issue.

I'd give Schultz, Bjugstad, Desmith and Simon for Nylander and Barrie.

There are some serious math issues with your proposal

I think the Leafs are a cutesy team who have hugely overpaid for the good players they have.

Between Tavares, Matthew's and Marner they overpaid by a good 4-5 million. Which is the equivalent of a top 4 d or really good complimentary player.

Getting rid of Kadri was stupid, he was a really important player for them. He took all of the tough assignments for the Leafs. I just wish the Pens could have got him.

I didnt spend a bunch of time crunching the numbers, so tell me where I'm off.

Throwing out a rough trade idea and having something like a $1M difference isn't really a serious math issue.

Wouldnt they want more for Nylander? Like MM?

I am sure they would. And quite honestly, I dont think the Leafs and Pens are a good match as trade partners anyways. I like Nylander as a righty shot for the power play which was the only reason I brought that up.

All of the players the Leafs and Pens would likely consider trading would be equally valuable to other teams.

I like this roster the Pens have put together. If they could get a great 3C or an upgrade over Petterson at LD (I like him a lot but if he got bumped down we would have 3 really good pairs) that would be perfect.
