And can again be promoted once they feel he is acclimated enough to NA ice to fill that spot if they are more comfortable with him over Jones/Bouch/ect.

I'd rather see Russell on another team and call Klef/____, Nurse/Larsson 1a/1b so we can't say Klef performs better or Nurse performs better in a lesser roll. Let Bear or Jones take the 1a/b spot, and the other compete with Persson for LD3 spot. But unfortunately Russell isn't going anywhere this season. Maybe in the offseason, but unless an injury happens we are stuck with his shot blocking prowess.

In case it helps: Most teams have a "troublesome" 6th defender, compliance buyout (no NHL-NHLPA deal) would have been our best chance... but you know, just a matter of time until another "troublesome" 6th defender (dangerous keyword: "veteran") then will be added - i mean, do Holland's adds at DRW do give any reason for hope?

If they can't trade him this offseason, they'll no longer have any reason to try to "preserve/establish his trade value" and, as such, will be more likely to sit as a #7. This would allow for Jones or Lagesson to take that spot. I'd prefer it happen now due to upcoming waiver eligibility, but Tippett likely veterans and, for all his shortcomings, Russell is currently playing well enough to hold a spot.

The guy had one off year and people think that is his norm. He is back playing to his norm, and has a very affordable 5.75 left for 3 more years. By comparison, he makes the same as Travis Zajac, except he is 2 years younger and has 9 more points than Zajac.
