Same old story.
1st goal on Andersen (weak no-stop)
2nd goal on Barrie
3rd goal on Andersen (can't go in from that angle)
and the beauty soft effort by Nylander on that easy tap in really shows what type of player he is.. (not sure how this will affect his Selke trophy chances by the way)
Leafs need to add a backup goalie.
Leafs need to trade Nylander and get rid of Ceci.
Then they need to decide whether they can get a good return for Johnsson and/or Bracco.
And make up their minds on whether they want to keep Muzzin or Barrie.
Big question mark is Matthews - I still feel he could be 2nd best player in NHL after McDavid, and even be close to him. That gap is getting bigger very quickly though - the guy has apparent character issues, and is not progressing on the defensive side.
Personally, as said yesterday I'd love a Barkov + Ekblad for Matthews + Nylander trade, even if Leafs would need to add a pick or a player like Bracco onto that.
There is still time.
But management needs to act fast and change the makeup of this team.
Right now, this team looks way worse on the ice than when Lou was GM.
in: Barkov, Ekblad (Flo trade - Matthews, Nylander, Bracco)
in: Georgiev, Kreider (NYR trade - Barrie, Johnsson)
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Kreider - Barkov - Mikheyev
Moore - Kerfoot - Kapanen
Timashov - Gauthier - Korshkov
13th, 14th: Spezza, Engvall
Rielly - Ekblad
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Dermott
7th: Liljegren
Andersen
Georgiev
that's a team that from top to bottom is willing to actually play for their coach and a win every night. - MaximusAurelius
Let me know when or why Florida does that deal at all. |

Overpay significantly if need be.
I do agree that will be difficult to convince Florida to make that trade - even if most Leafs fans on here would argue that Matthews and Willie have more value than Ekblad and Barkov (i disagree). |

I do not see Floridas incentive to trade away Ekblad for 2 forwards. |

Dubas really has done a number on this organization in such a short space of time. We have 4 more years with Matthews and he's bolting. I don't see an easy fix to this. UFA defensemen every year? Teak doesn't even look good on paper when you really look at it.
Kyle's gonna be the reason why we won't see a new GM that has no NHL experience be hired for a while.
So frustrating we handed the keys over to this guy.
Sigh......

No excuse. It is not like Marner was doing much.
Pittsburgh caved them in missing their best forward and best defenseman, 2 other key pieces and playing a backup.
Someone on TSN said the Maple Leafs organization has become and excuse machine. They are absolutely right.

This team is so bad.
(frank) me, how promising was it 2 years ago - walshyleafsfan
There is something fundamentally wrong with this group. The ONLY bright spot is that it has to be between the ears at this point. There is talent enough on this team to be considered a contender by everyone associated with hockey before the season started. It was not "Leafs fans delusion".

The team bites right now, just seem to get swarmed and play very small along the boards.

Injuries are a reason for sucking; but only if you have a poopty team that doesn't have the depth to overcome them.

Tyson Barrie cannot turn the puck over there like he did. That killed the buds. On Stone’s PP, at least from the angle on the Knights’ broadcast, you could fit a beach ball on the top right corner of Andersen. Fleury was unreal last night and showed it on that Tavares save. He had a great left pad save on Nylander (what a pass by Johnsson (?)), but man was he a little soft/lackadaisical in putting that one home. That save on Petan was spectacular, and you can say what’s with players shooting to the far side of a yawning cage, but you also cannot miss the net there, which you could if trying to pick the short side. That was a hell of an entertaining third from an outsider’s perspective. I went to sleep at intermission and downloaded the 3rd from my DVR, which is why I’m now making these observations. |

I thought Dubas did a good job of navigating out of a bad situation Lou created.
Unfortunately, he also poop the bed on the Marner and Nylander contracts and the backup goalie situation.
He gets a pass for the Matthews contract. Yes, it is a horrible contract for a player who is already seriously regressing in his 200ft play... The thing is, Matthews was going to get a MONSTER offersheet from at least a couple teams. He is the only one who legitimately had Dubas over a barrel.
In hindsight, I wish the Leafs took the picks and walked. The cap space, and the picks would make me more optimistic about the future than what I see Matthews bringing to the table.

I didn’t think so...maybe 1 on the PP, cross ice 1 timer that squeaked through his arm and the guy tapped it in from behind him.
Andersen has been the least of my worries...we just seem to get manhandled all over the rink. |
