This is the pathetic BS that has been thrown around the league for 100 years - and it's still BS.
Having a goon punch Cernak in the face doesn't do a damn thing - it's his job to get punched in the face. He loves getting punched in the face, because in the bizarre world of NHL HR, it keeps him employed.
You want to even it up? The Sabres should have knocked Stamkos out with a flying elbow. That would have sent a message. - Atomic Wedgie
You can preach from the roof-tops about not needing toughness...
I will check back with you in June, when the Blues, Bruins or some other "Well rounded team" of skill and toughness are hoisting the Cup. |

One of the criticisms against Tampa last year was their softness. All speed, all skill, no size or grit.
So, this year, they have overcompensated and lost their minds. They bring in Maroon, Schenn, and tell Cernak to go full Terminator.
Thing is, if you watched last season's games, the Bolts stuck up for each other. If somebody ran a Lightning player, others stepped up. Even Point and Stamkos would drop the gloves. Coburn, Killorn, Paquette, Gourde, and Joseph will all drop the gloves in a heartbeat if you run somebody.
Buffalo has no pushback. I was shocked that nobody went after Kucherov in the Sweden game. I was certain Kucherov was gonna get steamrolled after that. I was waiting for it to happen. It never did.
And last night, frankly, Cernak should have gotten a beat-down for that. Rob Ray should have appeared out of nowhere and beat Cernak bloody.
Sad thing is, we shouldn't even be talking about this. Never should have happened in the first place. I want to see skilled players PLAY. Unless it's Marchand, then phuck him.

So Tuukka Rask stonewalling the Leafs and almost winning the Conn Smythe in a losing effort means the Bruins our toughed the Leafs ?
The Leafs had a 3-1 series lead and then Rask became a wall. Sure toughness definitely helped but Rask out playing Anderson won them the series.
The Pittsburgh Penguins won back to back’s with skill. |

Let's make it that for every suspension a player earns, his team is docked 1 point in league standings. And for every game over 4 games of a suspension, the team loses additional points. |

It’s honestly comical how botts isn’t doing anything. I don’t care if you trade Risto for a bag of condoms. Show ownership, the team, and the fans are you trying.

So you added toughness and are on pace to lose as many games as you did last season by game 40 of this year if not sooner.
If Stamkos wasn’t as effective as Girgensons in the playoffs you guys might win a cup. Kucherov has what ? 1 point in his last 8 playoff games ? |

i bet none of the players even enjoy playing anymore. o'reilly was the only one smart enough to say it so he'd get run out of town.
its a group of perennial losers. the GM hasn't moved anyone off the team that hasn't won in 7 years.
Nothing has changed at all after freefalling from 1st to almost last for the 2nd year in a row. why bother putting yourself out there to defend a teammate? its an organization of accepted mediocrity from top to bottom
eichel got in a fight the other day to pump his team up. problem was, for 5 minutes eichel was in the box so pretty slim chance we were going to score. |

i seem to recall the "keys to the game" to beating the 2005 to 2007 sabres was "push them around" every single game
other teams tried to push them around and just got obliterated by overwhelming skill, not because they'd fight people back - robz228
maybe our GM will make a panic move and select Zach Kassian with the first pick this summer |

at what point is it botts fault instead of tim murray?
at what point is it krugers fault instead of housley
at what point are these players just not worth building around and ship them out |

I'd also like to point out that in game 2, the Bruins took runs at Leafs players at will, and the referees "put away their whistles."
The one Leaf who "responded according to the NHL code" got suspended for the rest of the series. Boston didn't get jack poop.
Kadri out lost us the series. I'll go to my grave believing that. |

this team's goal should be to build a team with good enough skill to be a contender. that is the hard part.
if we then want to critique their toughness and speculate if they can survive in the playoffs, then maybe worry about addressing it
saying a last place team isn't tough enough is just so dumb |

And....this is the very kinda toughness and grit I speak of. The willingness to stand up, even lose a fight...just to back a teammate. Earlier this year McDavid was hit cleanly in open ice. Within 3 seconds no less than 3 or 4 Oilers were all up in the face of the hitter. It energized the Oil. I saw a "TEAM" that had each others back. This is what lacks from many of these teams based purlely on icing the most skilled guys. SOME of this can be learned by most of the players on a roster, but some guys are not willing, and that's when you need to bring in some guys to fill that role.
Think of Cup winners....
Blues...a whole team of toughness
Bruins, skill and toughness blended
Kings...again, a whoile team of toughness
Hawks...Bickell, Bolland, Byfuglein....all key to compliment the skill
probably softest Pens...still...Bonino, Kunitz, Rust, Cullen high grit key players, actually Hagelin and Bonino were huge playoff point producers.
Grit is key to winning. Especially the grind of the playoffs. When I see a soft, purely skill based team win it all....then, I may agree with that type of roster construction. But, I haven't seen that done yet. So....show me the money!
