In the summer I thought a Matthews for Doughty plus was a worthwhile consideration. But that was when they still had Kadri. They can't move him now. Locked in folks, this is the team, only at the end of this year even less flexibility with all the roster positions needing to be filled. And thats just to ice a mediocre blah team. It's a mess.

Matthews and Holl for Jones and Jenner.

His effort on the backcheck is sometimes questionable, and certainly his positioning needs more work.

He is an incredible stick handler. He is an incredible passer. He moves with and without the puck very well. His hand-eye coordination is elite. His ability to pluck a puck away from a player ahead of him is excellent. His ability to read a play and act ahead of the play is elite.

His physical play - like boxing a guy out, grind on the boards, and so on is a weak part of his game.

All of the things that Matthews does not exhibit on a routine basis are things that he can and likely will learn. Don't forget how young he is.

You add to that the best wrist shot in the game, and you have a franchise cornerstone.

You are absolutely correct about his skills.

When you don't display any work ethic, those skills don't add up to much.

When he grows up and decides to put in the work required to be an elite player, then he will become one. People who think everything is fine have unbelievably low expectations and are flat out ignoring what is happening on the ice lately.
