the big difference is berube had actual head coaching experiencing in the nhl.
keefe is too green for a mid-season hire. he needs to learn the job while improving the team. he is set-up to fail.
keefe should have been a april-ish type hire. - Tumbleweed
Yeah because every single rookie coach has lost in the NHL.
Nurse sure (frank)ed up his rookie campaign. |

Elite franchise centre you build your team around.
Keep changing the subject...
Mackinnon backtracked because he lied. - RogerRoeper
The last few weeks he is barely an average NHL player. Sorry, the stats and the eye test say that, and this is not the first time he has decided not to bother showing up.

He had a good run playing next to Getzlaf and Rakell. Like 10 goals in 20 games? That is off memory.
Worth a shot. I like the idea of plugging skilled guys in instead of changing all the lines. I was thinking Engvall but Aberg has earned a look. - Santo_44
Timashov got too long of a look, imo. Goat too. Engvall has looked good, Spezza idk, I guess he’s been ok. I haven’t been following the Marlies, but why not give anyone who’s been playing well a shot, barring any salary/waiver nonsense. Korshkov, Bracco, Liljegren.. 🤷♂️ |

What was the name of the absolute stiff of a winger that we promoted to 1st line 5-10 years ago?
No, not Lonny Bohonos... |

how many rookie coaches with zero experience has an assistant or head coach in the nhl have been hired mid-season.
don't be so naive. people have a lot to learn on a new job. without the proper time of having the summer to plan/prepare, keefe was thrown into a position to fail.
it's unfair to keefe - he'll be unfairly judged for a lousy season. |

Pontus Aberg was leading the Anaheim Ducks with 9 goals on this date last year. The current Marlies leading scorer (24 points in 22 games) should get his first look with the Leafs now that Johnsson is out.

He has had success in the NHL. Timo is a depth guy, I think its only a matter of time before he is plucked off waivers. |

i am wondering if the kessel comparisons are not that far off. hate to say it, because i was drinking the koo-aid on this one.
very pudgy face for an 'elite' athlete. maybe he needs to lay off the chips and salsa and have a carrot or apple once in a while. |

Keefe has coached over half of this team. Don't be so niave...how many coaches have been hired mid season and have coached more than 50% of the team for an extended period of time? |

Agreed.
Overpaid for the term. - Fakepartofme
He is well overpaid, at any term.
Right now there is not even a hint at progression of his game. He had a better, more complete game 2 years ago.
Maybe instead of working on a tricky new release in the summer, he should work on his conditioning, try to figure out where he should be in the defensive zone, and maybe try to stay sober and keep his pants on.

the thing is, i dont see the D as a problem, its a great time to overhaul things if its not working out.
Rielly and Dermot are back
I think Muzzin and Holl are re-signed
sort out the rest with Sandin, Lily and UFA/Trades - senstroll
Not sure they re-sign Muzzin. I agree though that I am not as concerned about the Dcore as some.
The problem is at least as much the forwards who refuse to play defense, and when they DO try to play defense, they are completely ineffective offensively. |

Wow.

Matthews should forget planting carrots and parsley in his garden right now, because Aethsie is throwing some serious shade. |

dufus has shown a preference to the marlies.
i wonder how shore/arberg/agostino having been feeling about this.
they must have told they would have been given a fair shot to make the roster.
to see prefential treatment to marlies and with only 21 of 23 roster spots open, was a fair shot given??
is dufus a two-faced meany because he gave them the commodore treatment? |

Someone is going to be willing to pay Muzzin much too much.
The Leafs are going to be desperate for defencemen next year, but they simply don't have the cap space to match what some other stupid GM is going to offer.
Which, in an odd sort of way, is a good thing. |

For me the Kessel comparison is apt. He is not, at this stage, a better offensive player. People forget how good Kessel was and how little Matthews does besides unleash hellish wrist shots, (when he feels like it). The biggest problem is that, he is the highest paid and most talented player on the team and is setting an example of laziness and complete lack of give-a-poop. This is EXACTLY Kessel.
You are correct that other people, even on this board, and even Babcock hinted at a problem with conditioning.
... This is the only bright spot. It offers up some hope that one day he will grow up, start to take things seriously, and we will see his *real* potential.

They are all waiver eligible...
Engvall can be sent up and down.
Those 3 can be taken off waivers so he isn't just bringing them up for a game....keep up |

I honestly thought, in his second year, he would progress to being the best overall center in the game. he looked like he could be dominant.
May happen one day, but not in Toronto.

And? You are overvaluing that.
There are a lot of coaches with tons of experience without jobs right now. |
