Leading up to it Jumbo had slashed and prodded Mrazek a half dozen times, including skating right into him in the crease. - BINGO!
Absolutely. I'm not saying what Thornton did was right, either, and he deserved his penalties. I'm just saying that he didn't punch Mrazek for no reason.
Straight off the top
2 mins for Joe for roughing which he got
2 mins for slashing to Mrazek for slashing which he got
Then should have been 2 more for embellishment and 15 mins concussion protocol for pulling a Lunqvist and looking like you got shot.
Did he get pulled? If not he should have.
Gloved jab to an armored head and you lay there for 5 mins?? Jesus.
And yes shame on the players for not pounding Joe out.

Oh yeah. Like, they're all having fun with it too. I don't think there's really much controversy here.
No, Joe learned to be a schmuck from Chara. - powerenforcer
Yeah, I don't know where people get this idea that Thornton is classy. He takes advantage when he can and uses his reputation/status to get away with things that others aren't able to.
Thorton dug at Mzarek's glove after he covered the puck and clearly after the whistle. The slash was a whiff but still technically a slash (you don't have to make contact to get a penalty.) The punch was a bit much from Joe... but the acting by Mzarek deserves a nomination for an Emmy! The league shouldn't even address this stupidity.

A slash isn't a slash unless it connects.
Is a high stick a high stick if it doesn't connect?
How about elbowing or kneeing?

61.1 Slashing - Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an
opponent, whether contact is made or not. Non-aggressive stick
contact to the pant or front of the shin pads, should not be penalized
as slashing. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an
opponent’s body, the opponent’s stick, or on or near the opponent’s
hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play
the puck, shall be penalized as slashing.
This maybe the Old Guy (only 54 yrs old) yelling get off my lawn but
GET THE "BLANK" OFF MY LAWN! Crossing lines and all that...Give me a break! This is the young guy "Girl Hockey" (NO offense to Ladies Hockey! There's no checking in Ladies hockey) where you can't even hit someone with a good body check without them crying or wanting to fight!
The young guys have ZERO respect for their teammates! In old school hockey if someone messed with our goalie, it's game on! We would've have fought Thornton (regardless if the goalie slashed him or not - Which by the replay showed he didn't even connect) and beat the crap out of him for messing with our goalie!
Thornton came in late & the Goalie had every right to take a swing at him! However, once Thornton punched the goalie, where was the team? This pushing and shoving crap is BS! Drop the gloves and make a statement that you don 't mess with our goalie! Aren't you supposed to be family????? What's the message to your goalie when the team does NOTHING?????
Todays hockey players are awesome skaters, very talented but put them against any teams of the 60's - 90"s and they couldn't hold up against the physical play and fighting! It is different time but when someone messes with your Goalie you BETTER stand up and protect your guy!
It's HOCKEY!!! PLAY IT LIKE YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR TEAMMATES!
