I have no problem with a goalie waving a stick after an opponent jabs at him after the whistle. If the refs want to call a penalty for a swing and a miss, so be it. But I think 99% of the goalie swings and misses are not called a penalty.
If you want to fight, drop the gloves. Don't sucker punch with your gloves on.
Mzr - no penalty or two minutes for slashing
Jumbo - 2 minutes for roughing if Mzr gets nothing. 5 minutes for fighting if Mzr gets 2 for slashing.
I would go with the former over the latter. No slash and 2 minutes for roughing. |

This maybe the Old Guy (only 54 yrs old) yelling get off my lawn but
GET THE "BLANK" OFF MY LAWN! Crossing lines and all that...Give me a break! This is the young guy "Girl Hockey" (NO offense to Ladies Hockey! There's no checking in Ladies hockey) where you can't even hit someone with a good body check without them crying or wanting to fight!
The young guys have ZERO respect for their teammates! In old school hockey if someone messed with our goalie, it's game on! We would've have fought Thornton (regardless if the goalie slashed him or not - Which by the replay showed he didn't even connect) and beat the crap out of him for messing with our goalie!
Thornton came in late & the Goalie had every right to take a swing at him! However, once Thornton punched the goalie, where was the team? This pushing and shoving crap is BS! Drop the gloves and make a statement that you don 't mess with our goalie! Aren't you supposed to be family????? What's the message to your goalie when the team does NOTHING?????
Todays hockey players are awesome skaters, very talented but put them against any teams of the 60's - 90"s and they couldn't hold up against the physical play and fighting! It is different time but when someone messes with your Goalie you BETTER stand up and protect your guy!
It's HOCKEY!!! PLAY IT LIKE YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR TEAMMATES! - ericwinks

A slash isn't a slash unless it connects.
Is a high stick a high stick if it doesn't connect?
How about elbowing or kneeing? - bobbyisno1
You can get a slashing penalty for just swinging your stick dangerously. It doesn't have to make contact. |

What did Mrazek expect? What a fool. I don't think that was embellishment afterward, I think that was embarrassment and the realization that he put his foot in it knee deep. |

Mrazek. 110%. Should be suspended for his violent attempted swing at Thornton. Then he confronts Joe and gets a well deserved punched in the face...oh then lies on the ground half dead. Probably from the humiliation.
This never escalates is he:
A) Doesn’t take a violent swing with a goalie stick which is 5 times heavier than a regular stick
B) Then gets up and tries to get in Thornton’s face.
He got precisely what he deserved |

Couldn’t agree more. Proud of Joe. Not a fan of either team but as someone who used to play hockey. Those goalie sticks are like weapons. Nothing on the ice hurts like a slash from a goalie. He coulda broke Jumbo’s leg with that swing. Then tries to get up in his face? I’m glad he blasted him |

Throwing a shot at the goalies throat is pretty cheap - Stan_Bowman
Lol did you watch the part where he tried to take Thornton’s legs off with that ridiculous swing attempt? Thornton should took his helmet off and gave him a Myles Garrett for that. Pathetic man |

We are unable to know intent. My feeling is that he just wanted to show Thornton he was pissed. If he intended to slash Jumbo he would have made contact and that might be a suspendable offense. |

Mrazek went down like he got shot by a howitzer. Total embellishment. I know that goalies should be protected, but when the goalie leaves the crease and goes after a player, they should expect the worse. |

Maybe. But if you are caught off guard and the mask strikes you in the right place he can be temporarily debilitating. I speak from experience. |

I agree with both of you. If it is 2 players I am fully ok. But to punch goaltender like that is really cheap. That punch was not defensive, it was just cheap. Classless from Joe. - Keith25
Yes its not like the goalie as a full face gear...

He only missed him because Thornton kept skating forward. He reached as far as he could. He was tryin to hit him. No doubt. Some guys will tell you “you get one shot at me” if you miss you’re in trouble. Mrazek missed. Got beat up. Fair 🤷🏻♂️ |

Joe crossed the line, significantly. You just do not punch goaltenders in their face like that. Looks like idiot to me. Both him and Cans defenders should ashamed. He would not walk for 2 weeks, had he done that 15 years ago.
Scared where today's NHL is heading, no respect what so ever. It used to be tough but fair and respectful sport. Surprised it comes from player like him. - Keith25
So you think a player crosses the line after a goalie takes a violent swing at them with the possibly the heaviest piece of equipment on the ice - a goalie stick. Then gets up to go after him. And Joe was wrong for hitting the guy on the ice who’s wearing the most protective equipment of any player in any sport including a full mask?
Question: Think about how much of an idiot you sound like 🤔
Answer: it’s a lot |

He should break it. Joe should not walk for 2 weeks. That is what he'd deserve. Classless punk!

You'd think the Hurricanes would've learned by now. Don't poke the bear!
Mrazek 100% deserved that. |
