A slash isn't a slash unless it connects.
Is a high stick a high stick if it doesn't connect?
How about elbowing or kneeing?

Damn! Another Toronto fan who doesn't know the rules.

He only missed him because Thornton kept skating forward. He reached as far as he could. He was tryin to hit him. No doubt. Some guys will tell you “you get one shot at me” if you miss you’re in trouble. Mrazek missed. Got beat up. Fair 🤷🏻‍♂️

There was nothing keeping MZR stationary. IF MZR wanted to make contact with Jumbo he only needed to take one stride. It's not like Jumbo was flying away from him at a rapid pace (as if Jumbo is capable of that)

You'd think the Hurricanes would've learned by now. Don't poke the bear!

Mrazek 100% deserved that.

- Saskabush

Notice. They dropped their gloves. Small but significant difference.

I’ve seen Mrazek hit with 80-90mph shot to the head and not be hurt. That’s definitely embellishment. And why can’t you take a swing at the most armored player in the game? They are not above a physical confrontation if they are going to slash or trash talk. You don’t want to be punched don’t slash at someone. Many players over the years are able to avoid it by just not being ignorant hot heads.

What about Zadorov's (frank)ing horsesh!t slew foot on KK who has now been diagnosed with a concussion?

I guess that was just a hockey play right and the league will turn a blind eye because of the uniform he has on right

(frank)ing horsesh!t disgrace for a league

No it's is a penalty.
Yes
Yes
And yes
They penalties even if you miss.
Check rulebook.

It's rarely called unless it leads to an altercation etc.

The attempt is still penalty regardless if you make contact.

Embellishment?

The punch was to Mrazek's throat. How well would you handle a punch to the adam's apple? That said, I've always respected Thornton and I chalk it up to a heat of the moment situation. The game was too close to take a dumb retaliation penalty. Still would have like to see Edmundson go after him just for a little vigilante justice but it wouldn't have helped Carolina with the final game results.

Good on joe.
Petr slashed at him, which is much worse.

The goalie got what he deserved

Refs got it right - Thornton got the extra 2, which technically means he was more "in the wrong" that Petr, but only 2 minutes more. No suspensions necessary.

Joe crossed the line, significantly. You just do not punch goaltenders in their face like that. Looks like idiot to me. Both him and Cans defenders should ashamed. He would not walk for 2 weeks, had he done that 15 years ago.
Scared where today's NHL is heading, no respect what so ever. It used to be tough but fair and respectful sport. Surprised it comes from player like him.

- Keith25

Give me a break, "no respect", don't try and slash at a guy's knees if you don't want to take a shot to the kisser. That's the real lack of respect. Thornton barely hit him and he collapsed like he got shot. It's your teammates' responsibility to address the poke as the whistle goes, not for you to go hard at a guy's knees; that's bush league.

He should break it. Joe should not walk for 2 weeks. That is what he'd deserve. Classless punk!
- Keith25

He tried to break it and missed. Then went after a guy a half a foot taller and 15 years older than him. Then he got punched in the protective mask he had on and fell to the ice like a little girl. He started the whole thing. Then escalated it. Then got embarrassed.

To be fair, Thornton started it with the poke, but the Canes players should've addressed it, not a goalie with a wild swing at a guy's knees. All bets are off at that point.

Can't really be surprised when you take a swing at someone with a stick and then step to him and you get punched in the face. Penalties assessed were correct and fair.

Thornton’s initial poke at the puck was before the whistle and part of the game. I wouldn’t call that dirty by any means. It happens several times a night. Mrazek’s reaction of losing his mind and swinging his stick like a barbarian was where the line was crossed.
