Can anyone name one thing the Goat does well, besides being 6'4 all day? - leafsfann
He's defensively smart ...good positioning. If you need a big passive intelligent 4th line centre the Goat is "a" guy. He offers nothing on offence.
Engvall looks better then both Goat and Spezza. |

gauthier has 78% of defensive zone starts, with around 10mins of ice-time per game.
with such usage, it's really really tough to show some added value on the offensive side of the game.
he's a good player - last year and this year, whenever he was on the ice and in the offensive zone, his line was doing a good job of keeping puck posession, pressuring the opponent, and actually generating some chances.
any player's output will heavily depend on his usage (time, linemates, opponents etc.) - gauthier is no exception.
leafs should keep him, he's a reliable player that can do more on the offensive side - just isn't given the opportunity.
ideally leafs keep guys like gauthier, timashov, moore etc. - guys that will be on decent contracts and can still play on 2nd/3rd/4th lines, and then keep the stars (marner, matthews, tavares) - others at some point of time should be dealt for some other help (d, goaltender). - MaximusAurelius
I have no problem with keeping Goat. Every team has a 13th forward, but the Leafs just haven't decided who that's going to be.
What's tricky is the cap, so players than can be waived should be waived accordingly. |

If you look at the 4th line, you have the following players in contention for that line (assuming Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander / Hyman - Tavares - Marner / Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Kapanen):
Aberg
Engvall
Gauthier
Moore
Petan
Spezza
Timashov
If I were to order that in my personal preference of where I think the players fit, it would be:
Moore
Spezza
Engvall
Gauthier
Timashov
Petan
Aberg

Engvall Spezza Moore would rival a lot of team's 3rd lines and would probably be one of the best 4th lines in the NHL.

Engvall is too good for the 4th line. He reminds of Kapanen of a couple of years ago.
With Johnsson out, Keefe should try Engvall with Matthews-Nylander. If that works out, it would all but seal Johnson’s fate.

He does. He shouldn’t send an apology in the form of a haiku after, though. |

Trading Johnsson? He tries to hard for that line, making the big boys look bad? - Garnie
He's not as heavy as Hyman, so he's not as effective in that kind of a role.
I like Johnsson, but he screams sheltered 3rd liner to me. |

Doubtful.
Babcock coached him for 100 games, he definitely wanted him to play heavy.
He isn’t that type of player. |
