1st period was also slanted towards the Leafs' net.
- Atomic Wedgie

leafs stats

corsi 14-16
shots 7-9
scoring chances 7-5
high danger 3-3
xgf .94-.57

score 0-0

seems pretty evenish overall...again without watching the game

That's basically what I was saying at the end of the last thread.

The other teams' goalie is also making some very good saves. Last night we had 9 High Danger Chances to the Canucks' 8. It was an open affair.

Andersen had 4 breakaways against yesterday which is not acceptable; we need to clean that up. We also had some obvious breakdowns here and there, but all teams do.

The Leafs don't have great defense - everyone knows this - but the story is just so pronounced that we're forced to pretend that the purpose of an NHL goalie isn't to make good saves.

"If it wasn't for Andersen . . . ." That's literally his job and why he is paid $5 million dollars. Because he's really, really good at his job.

Similar to the Habs and the preposterous argument that "if it wasn't for Price . . .". there's a reason they have opted to dedicated 1/8th of their cap space to him. He's a vital part of their winning formula in the estimation of the management team.

If you say that the leafs lost but played a good game and got beat by a hot goalie, the response is, who cares they lost winning is what matters

If they win, it matters how they won

He had a few shift were he was trying to get off the ice but could not.
- zazzle

That would be the work of petan not getting the puck out. I think he did it 2-3 times on 1 shift and holl and muzzin were gassed.

Buy low candidate Josh Anderson

Also, Boston has to crash at some point...and more specifically... Pastaluck

Goals vs expectation

Pastrnak has 14 (!!) more goals than xG so far. The next highest is Eichel with 9 goals above xG.

Brady Tkachuk and Josh Anderson should have five or six more each.

Just give it 5 games.

Boston will be actually fighting in practice soon enough.

Bruins will finish first in the east.

And face the Habs as they take the 2nd wildcard spot.

This is the way.

where would we be without Andersen? a lottery team?
How do we keep giving up breakaways and odd man rushes, and leave guys all alone in the slot? Are the players clueless? Is the system terrible?
I don't see how they can beat the bruins or capitals in the playoffs if they don't tighten things up

I think Keefe is doing the opposite of what babs was teaching. Letting them run wild trying to get their confidence up and try and build some chemistry.

At the end of the day I think they’ll settle somewhere between what babs was teaching and this free for all.

Maybe?

I think we've actually been better defensively with Keefe than we were with Babs.. Forwards appear to be helping out more and our defense isn't always looking for the stretch pass.

They are playing an entire different system....

It’s not a free for all. They are prioritizing puck possession and I’m super excited to see what they do with it when they get used to the system.

Marner was carrying the puck in, realized his mates were still getting on the ice so he left the zone and went back in immediately when his line mates caught up to the play.

It’s creative thinking and guys like Marner will thrive.

The 3rd goal was another thing of beauty.

Defensively, they are, (at least trying to) taking away the middle of the ice to reduce the number of high danger chances

Agree.
But none of that matters when you give up 15+ grade A chances per game. I saw 3 shifts in a row in the 1st period on saturday where they left a guy in the slot with no leaf anywhere nearby

Last game was an anomaly, yes the Leafs are going to give more chances up than the Bruins. But the goal is to limit those chances as much as possible while dominating possession.

Plus the HDSC were 8-8 last game.

They have some areas they have to clean up for sure but that comes with trying a completely new system mid season. So far so good.

Ya they definitely don’t have the system down yet. A lot of breakdowns with those breakaway chances last night. Whether that’s system or execution I don’t know. I just don’t think they’ll keep this style of play up all year. I think it will even out a bit.

The fact they are grasping a 180 quickly tells me the opposite. Chances are high it only keeps getting better.
