There seems to be a noticeable tension between Canadian team fanbases...
- VeryModernMan

Nah, just your typical Western Canada inferiority complexes on display, nothing to see here.

Nearly 40% of the population lives in Ontario, with another 25% in Quebec and another 5%+ in the Maritimes , but they can't seem to wrap their heads around why "tHe LeAfS aRe So PoPuLaR" and why they get some much media coverage.

I think it’ll start to shift, millennials have choices that the previous generations didn’t. No one’s being forced to watch sportscenter/cbc/Sportsnet to get hockey coverage anymore. There’s so many websites/blogs/podcasts/message boards dedicated to specific teams. Most of my friends barely watch SC now unless it’s on as background noise.

But the political tension will only get worse

Thanks for explanation. And media coverage has surely absolutely(!) nothing to do that both Leafs and Sportsnet (plus plus) are owned by the same company.

Just like every other Flames fan, I’m not only impressed but extremely stoked with what Ward has brought so far with line changes...But wtf is Janks in there instead of Rhino???
Like seriously!!! I know Janks has suddenly played a couple good games back to back but there’s no way it holds close to any water to all the areas Rhino has brought...
Like wow 😯
Anyways, it’s time to put on our
sh🙊t kickers and kick some sh🙊t!!

It’s a very common misperception that Toronto is only a Leafs town.

The truth is that there are more fans of “other” teams than any other NHL city (a fact easily proven by tv ratings, and anecdotal poop like the fact that if I go downtown, I can buy any one of 31 NHL jerseys in shops).

Toronto is a hockey town. For many reasons (yes, including 51 years of suckitude), Torontonians cheer for a variety of teams other than the Leafs.

You are both right and wrong.

Leafs are ALSO owned by TSN.

But at the end of the day, if the Jets were more popular, that’s who they would feature.

Simply put, they aren’t.

Yeah, I can’t blame the networks.

NBA fans complain the same way. ESPN and Fox spend most of their talk shows on the LA teams, NY, BOS, PHI, etc because that’s where most of their viewership is located.

Simple. Best hockey players come from The GTA. Toronto is the hockey Mecca. You don’t have to like it. But you will have to learn to love it. Jump on board. LeafsNation ✊🏻

Saskatchewan produces more NHL players per capita than any other jurisdiction on the planet. As an aside, I never realized Ovechkin, Crosby, McKinnon, and many other teams top stars were all from Toronto. Thanks for the education.

It gets tiresome having to explain it to Western Canadians. They refuse to "Get it". They live in a world where Winnipeg jets should get as much coverage as Toronto and don't understand broadcasting revenues.

When the Leafs had different ownership they got the exact same about of coverage. Southern Ontario has 37% of the Canadian population. It has NOTHING to do with bias towards the Leafs as a team, it's bias towards whoever is most popular.

And in fairness, Rogers paid 5 BILLION for NHL rights. They area private company. They have every right to worry about revenues coming in.

Totally agree! Sometimes it’s good for the nation to see the Leafs get their a$$es kicked. It’s the popular vote.

I get the leafs having more coverage than any other team ...they have the largest fanbase ....but there’s very little content on the other Canadian teams ...but if Mitch Marner has an irregular bowel movement it’s the lead news story lol
