Panarin cap casualty
Teravainen cap casualty (Needed to move a sick Bickell)
Schmaltz Too early to judge you could be right
Danault Bad trade Q and Bowman on a different page
Hinostroza Did nothing in Chicago
DuClair Really? He sucked in Chicago and for years before
Kahun Maybe, the Hawks needed a defenseman
Kempny he wasn't much in Chicgo but in hindsight I agree
Jokiharju too early to judge
Oesterle Really?
Leddy Cap casualty
TVR Cap casualty - paulr
Too many excuses. I agree no way he keeps all those pieces but to lose all of them is unacceptable. And for the record Oesterle is doing fine as a cog on the Yotes 3rd Dpair. Adds lot of mobility on the back end. |

No, I get it. I'm not saying other fans are wrong for wanting to blow it up, just that I'm ok with some down years to not see my favorite players on another team. - tvetter
its a business....very rarely in a cap world does 1 guy start and end with the same team.
Id rather win then hang on to an aging player from past glory. Doesn't mean I don't like them, but on some of these guys the window to trade them is getting tight and if not....the cap problems aren't going away as you can't have over 33 million committed to 4 guys, with only 1 producing at a plus ROI. |

It is going to be a long ride for the team to contend again. Unfortunate yes but also understandable and after 3 cups most Hawk fans should be able to understand that. - paulr
SJ's not most hawk fans. Keeps ignoring the back story to every guy he wants back. Life is simple to SimpleJack. |

And you keep defending Stan on your hill as the team continues to patch work together a lottery team. Enjoy that ride.
No idea on a name.....Dean Lombardi still out there? Since cups seem matter there's a guy with 2, but im sure the Stan clan will diminish his results as well. - SteveRain
It doesn't seem too radical to suggest that the team's executives must identify a better path before torching the front office.
Posters here love to dwell in all Stan's mistakes, bit seem wholly unable to realize that many of their idealized other GMs they are pining for have plenty of screw ups, too. Guys like Doug Wilson. |

Sorry Steve, I'm out. All you do is move the goal posts or cloud things to prove a point. I'll let Mohel go round in circles in futility. - paulr
You said Karlsson was a great offensive player and never would be the overall defender Keith was.
I don't disagree....I pointed out Keith wasn't the best defender on his own team, and you take your ball and go home?
ANd curious.....how long does the "cap casualty" excuse work? I mean they have 9+ million in space now and need 2 goalies, and possibly Strome......so when does the cap casualty spin stop and we acknowledge Bowman has no damn clue how to manage a cap? I know Dale didn't.....but apparently he gave Stan quite the crash course as well. |

The Panarin trade I get.....I don't like the reasoning of it, 100% to help get Toews rolling knowing Hossa was on his way out. Also knowing 100% Panarin wasn't resigning here once that 2 year deal ended. He turned it into everyone's, sorry "smart hockey fan", golden 200 ft beast. What is Saad? a very good role player who has a massive trouble finishing chances. How many breakaways does this guy get and it looks like an easy save for the goalie?
The seabrook deal is horrible and inexcusable. He was rewarded for PAST play and you are now paying him 6.875 million a year to play bottom pair minutes and be the defacto captain.
Way too early to tell, but anyone excited about Nylander? What about Strome who has regressed back to his Arizona form which is why they sold high on him. Watch that deal....I highly doubt its below 4 based on other deals that have been given out.
The other trades over the course of Stan's career in the win now portion......ok....they went for it. has he been able to restock the holes left through the draft? DeBrincat is nice....what else has hit in the last 3 years at F who has been drafted who is still here? Not many.
This team is front loaded with money and goes as 2 guys go....19 and 88 and even then last year....they still were awful. So even more concerning is when 19 starts to regress again.....you are truly left with 1 line to produce and 2 goalies to bail out a clan of D men who are old/slow and playing in a system that is not suited for them, the forwards, or the goalies.....
and by the way.....Pittsburgh has stayed very relevant and their glory run started a year before the Hawks...…. - SteveRain
I 100% agree & let me add - “going for it” doesn’t excuse irrational trades.
Danault to Montreal in a last minute move on deadline day for 2 stiffs that the team didn’t need or play.

Ok...I think its very fair to say that 99% of the 2010 cup is Dale's vs Stan's.
I also think 100% of the 2013, 2015 cups are Bowmans.
I also think it's interesting that LA fired their GM after he won multiple cups.
I am not dwelling on Bowman's mistakes, but it also grows very tired of multiple people just writing off X or Y being sent out because of "cap casualty". All we read about in the spring of 2010 as how this team better win because of the "cap hell", btw where I coined my location from on this site, Talon put this team in......I get it when the window is open to win.....2013,2014,2015,2016,2017....sure....but here we are 3 years late (end of this season 2020) and yet.....guess where we are? Cap hell.
Q had his faults, and was terminated. I hope he wins a cup in Florida with Uncle Dale, and Talon shoves it up Rozner's ass....but that's just me.
Point is.....when does the non stop defending of Bowman end? how long is the grace period from them winning cups going to last? Didn't last the same for Q.....but yet as much as some of you criticize me.....all you guys do is defend Bowman and make excuses for some of his past horrific deals that wont allow this team to get underneath.....wait for it......CAP HELL
That's my issue. Its great they won, but I intentionally mentioned the pats because I am tired of the final crutch to be....the previous cups always are OK vs the crap present......this team if they made the tough, but necessary HOCKEY trades, I bet could take 1 last run before Kanes skill diminish.
I mean do Bulls fans OK this 20+ year crap because of their 6 titles? I would hope not. |

im pointing to Bowman rewarding for past success......thats' my point on Crawford.
You want a bad deal? They sign him for any longer then 2-3 tops above 6 million and Seabrook's will look like a bargain. - SteveRain
Dougie did that with Karlsson, Vlasic and Burns. Poile just did it with Josi. The board's dream GM just did it with Bob. The list is REAL long. |

Agreed....shows you coach and GM weren't on the same page. Thomas Fleischmann and 25...who I think scored in game 6 vs STL.....was on philly before montreal….name escapes me.....

Keith wasn't even the best defensive defensemen on his own....that was Hammer.
Keith was their most well rounded, but in regards to defending....that one goes to Nik.
And yes Hossa is a HOF, but their inability to fill his shoes 50%, even with the reacquiring of Saad, and the trade of Hammer......that got this decline into the level of NOT being a playoff team...... - SteveRain

Yes and I used to defend Bowman back then. Liked that he stuck with Hammer and then added Oduya. Made some other nice moves too that helped us retool for the 2013 Cup. And again in 2015.
But that was then, this is now. Since then just about all of his decisions have been poor. - SimpleJack
You were a Stan defender back when he re- upped 88 and 19? Now he was an idiot in retrospect. |

well the guy you love to hate, Dougie, some how has stayed a legit cup contender and only missed 1 year in the dance......and IM guessing he didn't have many top 15, 1t round picks.....
You get creative.....you need a damn good hockey opps department to single when a guy will never approach his ceiling, you sell high, and you move along......How many guys did the Braves trade during their prolonged run as prospects that bit them in the ass?
That's where you "win" on trades.....
To my last post......you want 1 last run.....
You deal 19 this summer. Send him to Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, wherever.....free that cap space. call up the kids ASAP on d and play them over guys who aren't going to be here long term....its time to evaluate to see if some of these kids can be long term answers. No, you won't get an answer right away, but you;ll get a better answer then leaving them in Rockford and then having the same growing pains in 2 years.
Deal 50 or 40 at the deadline. Sign 1 for 3 years tops.....Hire a veteran coach who can win an older team and hide the warts...….Make the playoffs, and who knows what happens.....
To me that's 100% better then keeping all the core guys, letting 50 walk for nothing or 40 for nothing.....still have the same coach whos system for over 100+ nhl games has shown by the start of next season....it doesn't work. |

I think he has as many dumb/bad moves as any GM since 2014/15. Toews/Kane contracts. Seabs contract. Bickell contract. All the NMCs. The Panarin trade. Losing TT. The Danault trade. The Schmaltz trade. Losing Hinostroza, Kempny, TVR, DuClair, Raanta, etc. The Kahun trade. The Jokiharju trade. It goes on and on and on.
How can you say “it’s not his fault guys got older”? Like he didn’t know Seabs was already old and only going to get older? Why sign him to that long of a term? With a NMC?!?!?
Why is he not to blame? If not him then who? And please don’t say our current roster situation was inevitable, or that this is all just bad luck because of the cap. - SimpleJack
Most people here like to compare in one way or another the Hawks to the Wings. The Wings had a number of guys already in their 30's still playing at a high level when they went to the Cup the last time in '09 and lost to the Pens.
Maybe the Hawks thought the career arcs of their players would mirror that but everyone is different so it's hard to apply.
It's not that you blame him for guys getting older, you don't blame him for some of the Core's play dropping off before you'd expect it. You can blame him for it but it's just playing the hindsight game.
Toews play was started falling off before he was 30. Not sure how many anticipated that...or Seabs' play falling off drastically the year after his deal was signed.

So, GM Steve....you're in the middle of a Cup run and your best player is a UFA at 28. He demands an 8 year contract for big money. Do you tell him to pound sand and close the window, or pay him and contend for a few years? |

The hawks ownership was very honorable by taking care of their star players with some of the largest contracts at the time, but party’s over some major moves have to happen, if they can happen due to high contracts. To move forward you may have to eat some of the problems. |
