I'll never understand the draft for need group. Draft the best player available and if necessary, trade from a position of strength to address a position of need. It's not that difficult of a concept to understand. - RickJames77
If you have a glut of players at one postion in your deveopment pipeline, you don't want them fighting for ice time as they work their way through your system, as it hinders rheir development.
First 15 picks in the draft, hells yes, BPA.
After that, make more nuanced decisions. |

Edit: Although, I may not entirely agree with your cut off. I think it depends on the draft, team rankings, and if anyone towards the top of your board slipped. |

In the Sabres'defence, they only gave up a 2nd round pick for him.

I don't actually read what you (or anyone else here) actually writes. I take a cursory glance and then make wild assumptions to support my own arguments.

Dylan Mcillrath was such a bad pick then. I remember watching that draft and everyone was saying that it was a bad pick. - Aaron_85

I can't believe they gave up a draft pick to speak with him on the phone.

Exactly!
I also agree with the idea of drafting the same position as often as possible. Look at Nashville. They drafted a LOT of defense and were able to trade them for other pieces they needed.
I'd be drafting centers and defense as often as possible. |

gotta disagree here... Gardiner was only on rare occasions "overused".....
he rarely killed penalties or faced top opposition - when he did he got exposed consistently... in situations where his minutes went up because of injuries to other defenders, and he was put into tougher "defensive minutes"... he was exposed.
see Game 7 when Rielly got the puck in the face.
the real issue was/is simply that Gardiner was a talented hockey player, very dynamic skater - who should never been made into a defenseman.
He was a defenseman who was weak at defending. - BorjeFan4Ever
He's playing less than 3-4 minutes nightly in Carolina than he ever did in Toronto, including his rookie year. |
