Paryako, Pietrangelo, Bouwmeester, Edmundson, Chara, Carlo, Millar ...
just a few of the guys who played big minutes in the stanley cup final last year.
anybody 5'7"? - BorjeFan4Ever To be fair (and I agree with you), Krug and Grzelyck were very instrumental in the Bruins' run last year. But if you have those guys, you need to balance it out with size. We got handled over the duration of that series. I'm not letting the pendulum swing in the opposite direction and demand the world's largest team, but last SCF, and the one before that, helped reiterate the importance of having at least a semblance of heavy hockey in the playoffs. I think the Leafs have next to zero and to me, that might be a problem unless you pull a rare Pittsburgh Penguins type of cup win. They don't happen often though. |

Kovy is a free agent! Leafs to sign him for 700k. Best move Dubas could make! PP Specialist. |

Recency bias.
And rare? It happened three times.
It is a copy cat league and fans go crazy over recent cup wins. |

Teams have won with size and without size.
I don't fall into recency bias and the copycat stuff. - Santo_44
I think you're making an assumption that if I ran the Leafs, I'd litter them with giants back there. All I'm saying is a big mobile defensive defenseman could really help you guys out and help bring some balance to your team. The Penguins did it, but outside of them I feel like most of the last bunch of winners have had size. |

I can get behind this idea. I just don't know who/where and how much it'll cost to get said player. |

You're saying the Penguins defense and size from '09 was the same as '16 and '17? I would disagree.
Also, I'm not going crazy here. That's an exaggeration. |

do any of them ever consider going to live somewhere else - where the real estate prices aren't as high?
or do they really HAVE to live in the GTA... so that they can say they can get to a world class theatre and restaurants?
how was it that the house their parents bought for $3 actually cost $3 back then? - BorjeFan4Ever
thats not a simple question that can really be answered here..but lots of factors.
supply/demand, land value increased, easier to get loans, lower interest rate...are a few.
I moved to Ottawa area beacuse I didnt want to live in a Big City like Toronto where my career pretty much required me to be..if I wanted to make decent money that is.

It is an asset.
But by no means is it worth it to go out of your way to find a skilled big guy. If he can play? Great. |

Hockey was different in 2009.
If you didn't have size, scouts didn't even want to look at you.
There has been a massive shift and it is for the better. |

I would still say that 8 of the last 10 cups were won by teams that had some size and I believe that is important. Not the be all end all. It doesn't trump skill. But it is a factor and the Leafs have much less of it than 8 of the last 10 SC winners. That's my opinion. I'm not saying you're wrong. |

Fun Leafs story:
We signed Hal Gill to be exactly what you are talking about. 3rd pairing guy, eat minutes on the PK, sweep the front porch.
But he didn't put up the points, so Leafs Nation revoked his passport and deported him.
He ended up in Pittsburgh, where he played significant minutes in game seven of the Stanley Cup finals in '09, filling the role the Leafs originally signed him for.
Frank you, Leafs fans. |

Krug - Steven_Seagull
precisely... Krug. one guy, who plays behind a guy like Chara, doesn't kill penalties and is usually on the ice with someone who is much larger.
and for the comment about Pittsburgh winning without size on defense... when they won the cup they had Hainsey(6'3"), Dumolin(6'4"), Ian Cole, Schultz, Maata... all north of 6'0"...
so that crap about the Penguins winning without size is just that - crap |

I always mix up that groups lack of skill for lack of size, my bad.
Also, Grzelyck. Him and Krug are actually quite good as of last year defensively if you watch them enough. |

What's interesting is a lot of these people have remote jobs but still choose to live in and around the core of Toronto.
You can move further out like Newcastle if you can remotely work and live a far cheaper lifestyle. - Aaron_85
Yup. I started to work remotely and will do that. My Pickering house is small but worth a small fortune now. |

I am all too familiar with this story. So sad.
As I said yesterday in a thread. Leaf fans seem to want every guy to be the best at everything but also play for nothing. It just doesn't happen. I'm sure it's common in other places too where people think other players on other teams are perfect and their guy isn't.
