are you guys really arguing about trading matthews?
there is no way matthews should be even considered tradeable until at least the last year and a half of his contract because he probably won't sign a new deal here (could be a different story if the leafs win a cup).
kyle dubas already screwed up his 5 year chicago style cup window by paying matthews, marner and tavares the absolute most top dollar and getting rid of guys like kadri and brown and letting someone like gardiner walk for nothing. now that he has done the damage the first guy outside of ceci to go to free up cap space and shore up his defense has to be nylander or it has to be tavares.
nylander because he held out half a season in favour of getting his top dollar contract, if not nylander then tavares being 30 already is the next logical choice especially since he's 11 million on the cap.
it seems like dubas plan now includes trying to sign pietrangelo in free agency, sure to be another 11+ million dollar contract, how can he possibly even sign him?
if the leafs stay with this roster for the rest of the season, don't expect much. the team has holes that need to be filled and you can't fill them without cap space. |

Matthews is 8th in the league in goals. Leads the team in points and has a better +- than marner Tavares and rielly. Some of you guys have pretty ridiculous expectations - Ravenz93
Yeah, this Eichel vs. Matthews thing is such a non-starter Buffalo fan fixation thing that we really shouldn't be wasting energy discussing. |

Eichel plays a more physical style. He made Muzzin look like a chump. He plays in all situations. He's not the goal scorer Matthews is, but his value to his team is certainly as much. |

He’s got more goals than Matthews this year, we’ll see if he tails off.
We need something to motivate Matthews, maybe people saying “Jack is better,” is the kick in the butt he needs. |

How about the coach's eye test? Or the media. As much as we laugh, there are people who have forgotten more about hockey and pro sports than you or I will ever know. Those people are asking questions also.
Hey, I still wouldn't trade the guy (well, I would for a great return) and I still hope he turns it around, grows up and plays up to his talent. I just think the free pass should be over. He should be playing better than a 74 pt. pace and even +/- in November December. - Aetherial
Quality of competition.
Babcock fed him sheltered minutes.
Keefe is feeding him sheltered minutes.
I won’t be shocked if they get outplayed by vesey sheary johanson tonight.
Edit- they being the Matthews line.
Tavares will be dealing with jack.
Kerfoot will get skinner line. |

He’s a Dubas player, everyone blamed Babs for playing him, but his analytics from 16-17 to 18-19 were better then Rielly and Gardiner ( obviously a lot less ice time )

Getting rid of the guy who was suspended in the playoffs (and may have prevented the team from winning a round) 2 years in a row, a guy who was playing on the 4th line that has a whole 5 goals this year, and letting the biggest whipping boy defenceman since Larry Murphy walk for nothing is the downfall of this team currently?
Give your head a shake man.
