Glad I only have girls. Oldest Daughters dance was only $3500 this year for 5 dance classes one hour a week. Pretty much $700 for each class one hour a week for 8 months.

I have a son in hockey and a daughter in dance as well. The cost per hour for dance is actually higher than hockey.

It's also unlikely she'll be joining a rec dance league or doing performances on a pickup basis when she's an adult. I worry about how physically active she's going to be after she's finished with dance at about age 18.

Cost is probably higher per hour. Dance clothes are cheaper than hockey. There are certainly ways to stay active after she quits dance.

Are you pretending that they are better?
Here's how it actually is.

Lindbolm .60 Hayes .54 Voracek .69

Pearson .61 Horvat .75 Leivo .53

Yes they're much better because I'm talking about 5 on 5, where the majority of the game is played. Although I should consider both.

To date the Canucks have 235 total points from their forwards, Miller, Pettersson and Boeser account for 103 of those points, or 44% of the teams total offensive production from the forwards. That's too much!! We need a better second line option to balance that out and make it hard for other teams to play against us.

Depends on the school. Costumes for recitals can be expensive and they'll need 4 -5 of them that will only get used for one or two performances.

Don't get me wrong, dance is a great activity for some girls. But it's definitely not cheaper than hockey.

That spending stupidity is on the parents, not hockey as a sport in general. Those are the people who are responsible for ruining hockey in Canada.

Registration is $750 to $800 per year. You can get good quality used equipment and skates for under $150-$200 per year. If you play house (which at age 6 you would be) then your team fees for the season would be about $400. So total cost for the season at that age would be about $1,400. (Most teams at that age group do fundraising (bottle drives, etc.) to reduce that cost.) Over a 7 month season you're paying $200 per month for about 4 hours weekly of highly organized, coached, indoor recreational activity. That works out to about $12.50 per hour. *

Now compare that to other sports or activities and look at the opportunity for your child to continue that endeavor as an adult. I think hockey is a very cheap investment in skills they can potentially use their whole lives.

*If you decide to play rep hockey or spring hockey and do extra development, then yes, you can pay considerably more. But, if your budget doesn't allow for it, you don't have to. You can and probably should choose to have your child play other sports like baseball or soccer in the spring and summer.

Even having $1,400 extra is difficult. Sure it is a write off, but you don't get it all back. I think more needs to be done to make it affordable. Reg fee's would be the place to start. Also my coworker doesn't spend a lot on gear, it is tournies that are the killer.

I feel like I'm interrupting an interesting discussion, so feel free to carry on when you head on over to the new blog.

Fun game last night. Nice to see them finally beat Vegas!

Minivan....just so you know, IMO the Flyers have a much better top six than Vancouver does, as an example, but you'd never mention that because you only look at their scoring totals as a team. It's a more consistent attack and harder to defend against two good scoring lines.

Lets!!! Go!!! Flyers!!!

Wow that second line is trash
