Couple of tidbits from Spector today:
On Montreal - Bergevin could listen to offers for Max Domi if the pending RFA proves too expensive to re-sign. Chaumont suggests depth players such as Nate Thompson, Nick Cousins, and Brett Kulak could be peddled for draft picks. Tatar has a year left on his contract, but Bergevin could gauge his value in the trade market.
On the Isles - Lamoriello may still have to consider adding a veteran blueliner. Staple also examined how the Islanders could address their scoring drought on the wing. He suggested Ottawa’s Tyler Ennis and Vladislav Namestnikov, Los Angeles’ Tyler Toffoli, Buffalo’s Conor Sheary.
On Nashville - David Poile could become a seller at the trade deadline if his club fails to gain ground in the standings. Center Kyle Turris has been shopped. Others could include Craig Smith, Mikael Granlund, and perhaps Nick Bonino.
Also, If the Flames fail to improve this season, a major change such as moving Gaudreau won’t happen until the offseason.
Friedman also reports the Pittsburgh Penguins are in the market for a replacement for sidelined winger Jake Guentzel.
Friedman recently claimed there’s talk Saad could be available. - adambuffalo
Oh baby.
Make it happen. I needs Domi |

I’d rather have an actual Center not another one that is forced to play out of position. |

I don't know if it's specifically mentioned in the CBA, but the NCAA won't allow players that played in the CHL into the NCAA either, regardless of what the NHL says. - buffalofan19
Beat to the punch.
There is a process to regain eligibility, which makes absolutely no sense for Cozens.
I PLAYED FOR (OR SIGNED WITH) AN OHL, QMJHL OR WHL TEAM. WHAT CAN I DO TO REGAIN NCAA ELIGIBILITY?
There is an appeals process for players who have played in the CHL and some have gone on to play NCAA hockey. The appeal must be filed by the NCAA school and only once the student-athlete has enrolled on campus. The minimum penalty is typically at least one year of athletic eligibility plus additional games depending upon the circumstances.

Cozens will be in Buffalo next year, even if he gets the Hayton treatment and is in and out of the lineup or playing in a depth role.
He is above the WHL even at this point. |

Couple trade ideas:
To Pittsburgh: Okposo and Sheary
To Buffalo: Galchenyuk and Jack Johnson
Pittsburgh gets forward help they have been looking for and get rid of two guys the fans have been trading away for two years.
Buffalo gets a UFA center who has been unsuccessfully forced to play wing and a defenseman who has seemed to re-find his game. KO and JJ both signed for 4 more years, but JJ is $2.75m less in salary.
Adding a dman is not ideal, however that is why I then call Toronto and offer either McCabe or Miller for Kasperi Kapanen. Toronto has plenty of scoring throughout their forward ranks, but definitely need help defensively. They have one defenseman signed past this season and although I don't want to help them, playing against Miller or McCabe wouldn't worry me.
Next, call the Isles and offer Bogo for Brassard. If you can add ERod for HoSang. They have capspace to take on the additional salary and perhaps Lou could get Bogo playing up to his potential again.
Finally, Vesey and which ever dman doesn't go in the Toronto trade to Nashville for Bonino. Vesey completes the tour of teams he wouldn't sign with getting traded to the team that drafted him and Nashville gets a younger dman to replace one of the three over 30 dmen that are UFAs. - adambuffalo
As far as the PIT trade goes:
-why do they want the extra salary of KO?
-and JJ is less of a Cap Hit, but he blows. At least Okposo is a decent bottom6 forward for us
I doubt a trade with the Leafs happens
Interesting NyI idea.
Idk that we’d get much more than a mid-late pick for Bogo though?
Don’t think they’d wanna trade Brassard if they’re trying to win in the playoffs
HoSang could be a possibility bc he’s not a roster player, and they could be ready to dump him
Bonino is an interesting idea from Nashville
MUCH better than the Turris or Johansen ideas I’ve been seeing
Doesn’t solve the 2C issue,
but he’s still a decent player who can be a placeholder for next year if we wanna play Mitts &/or Cozens on the wing
*Bonino might be the best idea I’ve heard considering his talent level & production, what it would likely cost to get him, & contract
Nice job here |

The CHL is considered a pro league as far as NCAA eligibility is concerned. Players get benefits that are on the NCAA's no-no list, even if it's not cash compensation. There is also a question as to whether he or his family has hired an agent yet. - buffalofan19
Pretty sure players have gone from JRs to NCAA before
Maybe it’s the other way around though? |

Signing his contract ended it for sure. CHL players have already lost their eligibility, since it's considered a pro league. Some appeal and get it back, but they generally have to sit out a year. - Lunaion
Gotcha. Thanks for the info |

I imagine the appeal goes something like this: "I didn't get drafted. The CHL was a bad choice." |

Seems like a tough process. You have to be enrolled at the school and know you're going to sit at least a year. On the other hand, it's the NCAA and it's surprising when they ever make exceptions.

Pittsburgh has a lot of salary coming off the books and the additional $2.75m wouldn't hurt them. Jack has been playing pretty well this year and has a PDO over 100. He's also a +7 after finishing the last two seasons as a minus player. Currently playing over 19 minutes a night starting in the Dzone 55% of the time, he could provide a physical presence to compliment Montour or Joker.
I've been on the Bonino trade idea for a little while now. I think he could definitely slot in as 2C for this year and next season. His ice time is nearly identical as Skinner's this season, his faceoffs are at 55% and last season he finished 13th in Selke voting, ahead of guys like Toews, Tavares, Marner and Marchand. |

They have gone from juniors to the NCAA before, quite often, but not from the CHL otherwise known as Canadian Major Junior (Western Hockey League WHL, Ontario Hockey League OHL and Quebec Major Junior League QMJHL). NCAA players generally come from the USHL or NAAHL. Both American junior leagues. Sometimes they come from a lower level Canadian league like Junior A or Junior B.
For instance, The Buffalo Jr Sabres are junior A but they are not Major Junior A. Therefore, a player can play there until they are 20 and then go play NCAA. The hockey isn't as good as in the USHL though, not sure how it compares to the NAHL these days. |

I guess all that's missing is the ability to score points.
*At an acceptable 2C level. |

He's above the WHL but not drastically.
He's about where Barzal was at this point in his development. Probably not gonna learn much more at the WHL level, but not eligible for the AHL. |
