We're not.
Pegula is. 😉
Weren't his drafts given good grades? I know, we don't really know how they'll pan out. - Powerslave
In my view his 2019 draft was ok, not great. Obviously I like the Cozens pick and Portillo in the 3rd rd. I hate the Johnson pick and the rest are meh. Rousek in the 6th rd might pan out but a big if.
The '18 draft was very good aside from Dahlin. Samuelsson and Pekar are good picks and I like the Cronholm pick.
The '17 draft was maybe his best draft if a few things pan out. Obviously big question mark on Mitts but 6K is a fantastic selection and I recall on draft day I wanted him with that extra 2nd rd pick. He was the best goalie in that draft imo, not just the best European. If Davidsson comes over and one of either Bryson or Weissbach make it, it's a great draft for Botts.
So many questions but I would give Botts a B+ so far.

The million dollar question then is, is he around to see it pan out?

You wanted one of the 20 forwards available at that pick, I assume, because it's not like Johnson isn't talented.

I wanted Kaliyev or Brink in that spot. We didn't need to draft a dman and although Johnson is a solid prospect, he was a reach in my view. We needed a forward.

What you said is the prevalent analytical opinion.
What's interesting is the analytical opinion on the Samuelsson pick the year before was worse than the Johnson pick, for similar reasons, with Samuelsson having less offensive talent.

Some mocks liked Samuelsson as a late 1st and others didn't. I liked the pick. I wanted Kaliyev with that second pick as opposed to Johnson. Botts has picked 8 dmen in his 3 drafts, just thought a winger with pick 31 was the more prudent play.

should have taken Pinto, Brink or Kaliyev over Johnson at 31 IMO

The analytical crowd hated the Samuelsson pick at the time, and even more so now. They are WAY down on him.

I guess we'll see on him. I'm not as down on him. I like his size and defensive game and his HC at Western Michigan Andy Murray has always talked positive about him. He can't be that bad getting the C for USA at the Juniors.

I would guess the analytics crowd are down on him due to his lack of offensive production?
My understanding is that isn't his game, rather more of a stay at home, tough Dman with high character level.

Well, we certainly need more character on this team, that's for sure.
