Botts interview notes:

Botts was late. Rude.

Sounds like he has CTE.

His lack of confidence oozed through the speakers. Sounds nervous, like he is being interviewed by the mafia and he stole their money.

Anyways, seriously now, he thinks we are grouped in with a large amount of teams outside the top 7 or 8 elite teams that have a chance to win any given night. Thinks we are in the playoff conversation.

He likes the way we have been playing and thinks we haven’t seen the results we deserved. Also chastised the team’s ability to close out games.

Says we need to improve and have work to do. Thinks some of the improvement can be by roster players like a Sheary and Vesey producing more.

Is pressed on scoring help coming in prospects. Is asked if there is anyone besides Mittelstadt and a Thompson that can help. Asked specifically if there are other players coming to help. Botts mentions Olofsson, Mittelstadt, Asplund and Pilut. Mentions that getting more scoring from defense to help out too. Schopp presses again and he mentions Cozens. Doesn’t seem to think there are any other forward prospects with a chance to score in this league.

Asked about trades says they want to make a trade but nothing has materialized.

Asked about goaltending, says he likes Ullmark’s consistency and says he has been good for them this year. Hopes to get Hutton back into playing well. Says Hutton has always been discounted and has the work ethic to make it. Thinks he will work it out.

Schopp did have to say “no disrespect” at one point when pointing out that Mittelstadt and Thompson have 200 games between them now and only have 20 goals to show for it. When you have to say “no disrespect” you are about to disrespect the person.

The only thing really interesting was the two or so questions by Schopp where he pressed Botterill on having the scoring on the roster to compete and the lack of many prospects at forward who can score. The rest was softball BS.

Basically Botts said, don’t expect a trade because we can’t get it done. He is not selling at deadline, there’s work to do but we should compete for the playoffs. He is disappointed with the results but thinks we are playing well in general. Thinks we are better than our record.

This team would be higher in the standings if Hutton didn’t cost us 4 games alone.

We are the 6th best team in the entire NHL in limiting high danger scoring chances. We are a borderline elite defensive team, yet our goaltending has given up the 10th most goals in those said scoring areas which is unheard of.

The analytics match the eye test offensively, the Sabres can win though by playing dull hockey like the Stars and Isles do though if their goaltending didn’t bring us down.

It is fair to expect more out of Hutton, Sheary, Vesey, Mojo (whose been better lately). However he has nobody to blame but himself for not acquiring a 2C.
