Rinne was the unsung hero of the Pens 2017 Stanley Cup Championship. He should have gotten a ring for it.

This is one situation where the stats and the eye test just don't match up. If you watch enough Preds games it because easy to tell something just isn't quite right... Too many sloppy turnovers and defensive lapses that directly lead to scoring chances, and with our struggling goal tending... A lot of goals. The problem isn't the amount of chances with Nashville, it's the quality. A lot of issues with basic fundamentals too... Poor puck management, poor passing, difficultly handling passes, and just a general lack of awareness that's led to a lot of consistency issues.

You are right though, the goal tending sucks. There's been a lot of poor defense being played in front of them too however. 7th fewest High Danger Chances just doesn't sound right. It feels like they give up about 20 a game.

To your first paragraph, that's fair. I don't watch a lot of Preds games.

To the second paragraph, you can't argue math. What if feels like versus what actually happens are two very different things and only one is correct.

Goaltending is the biggest issue. I'm not going to say that maybe Laviolette didn't grow stale to some degree, but I think an upgrade in goal would make a bigger difference than coaching.

It's like the old worn out saying goes, Show me a good coach, and I'll show you a good goalie.
I think subpar goaltending has cost him his job. That or the 9 million dollar man is a jinx.

Nah like most coaches Laviolette hit his shelf life. One common trend I see among coaches especially the older guys like Babcock, is that they are stuck in their ways. They cant adapt. When the system you are using fails you have to adapt to a new system and a lot of these coaches just keep trying the same things over and over expecting different results.

It is quite amusing to see Duchene go to another previously good team and see the team implode. The only team he didnt implode with his presence was Columbus but he ruined them a different way

Could see him as a possibility in New Jersey next year...would think he is the kind of experienced coach Shero needs now!

Well he did it. I didn't think he would, but I suppose that losing to the Ducks sent him over the edge. Probably should've happened a few weeks ago. I keep hearing the ex NJ guy as the next coach, but to me that would be either a lateral move or downgrade. If you're pulling the trigger now, you're saying the season can be salvaged. You better put the right guy in there or you'll be the next one gone.

Grab the popcorn, folks. The Preds season just got very interesting.

Such an unprecedented state of affairs for Preds. Completely antithetical to how Preds organization has operated from the beginning.
Bruins at home tonight and still no coach. Wonder if Poile takes the reins for tonight.

I see.
So do you think he gets fired if Rinne was playing at the same level as he was at the beginning of the season?
Or do you think he was at his best before date and Dave was gonna gas him regardless of their record?

This team has looked "off" for a while. Even when they won the Presidents Trophy, they were wildly inconsistent at the end of the season and in the playoffs. The next season (last year), they claimed it to be fixed and came out blazing, but again, couldn't sustain and became inconsistent. Down the stretch they were awful and not one Preds fan would've been surprised if they had been swept in the first round.

The most obvious problem is special teams, which has been absolutely horrendous for over a year now. Poile screwed up in the offseason by not holding the coaches accountable. The writing's been on the wall for a while.

Goaltending isn't helping, we could usually count on that even when the team is playing so bad. Now we don't have it either. It's a mess. Personally, I think Poile overvalued a lot of the players, like Joey, Turris, Duchene, Smith. None are consistent, only showing brief glimpses of their potential. That doesn't get it done.

I think if this fails, and they don't make the playoffs, some people may start to encourage Poile to take early retirement. For all the talk about how good he is, he's had a lot more misses lately. The window is just about shut.

Rinne was much like Luongo. Great reg season goalie in their primes but playoff chokers to the nines.

I think it's time David Poile retires. Essentially just put this franchise back 5 years.

Seriously... Hynes? Can't buy a win Hynes? Drove what looked to be a promising Devils team into the basement of the league Hynes? Preds can look forward to a lotto pick.
