Let me guess, Rielly is leaving because Leafs are in cap hell, right? We had to suffer through a year of hearing every RFA was miserable and signing offersheets last year.

The act is old. There's also an incredible double-standard with the Leafs compared to every other team.

- RogerRoeper

I don't think Rielly is leaving - and I believe the Leafs would be stupid to move him... but that's just me.

What I'm suggesting is that the Leafs going forward have a limited amount of CAP to spend on defense - as a bi-product of the amount they have tied up in long term forward contracts.

How Dubas spends that will be challenging for him - contingent upon how he sees the defense constructed.

No way Dubas pays Ceci north of 2.5M for what he brings - so Ceci's 4.5 becomes available.
Muzzin maybe resigned (I would) probably somewhere between 4.5 - 5.5 dependent upon term - again I would. - so Muzzin's current 4MCAP hit becomes available.
Barrie's 2.75 comes off the books
add Dermott's expiring entry contact 8-900K

so Dubas has what 12-12.5 + CAP MAX increase to sign likely two defensemen (which assumes that Llijegren and Sandin make the team out of camp 2020)

and of course a 1M for Martin Marincin... 'cause for some stupid reason the Leafs have to keep this donkey around.

so, yeah you are able to sign Muzzin and Barrie - but is that what you want to do going forward?

yeah, i like what the muzz brings....

.... but, i saw muzz and a bunch of other leafs just loading on the bus prior to the leafs game against the yotes. muzz told my 6-year old son he'd be back to sign his autograph. he never came back.

(frank) muzz and the broken foot he walked in on. he can rot in hell.

The cap is going up every single year. That 40 million will not be nearly as big of a deal even this summer.
Teams will be spending that on 4 forwards regularly going forward.

And BTW, is it better to spend 40- million on 6 worse forwards? Look around the NHL at what's going on.

Seriously though the Leafs are better now with the past few seasons of experience. Need to keep Freddie fresh for PO success.

Again, I'd love to know how you can predict the cap numbers, but the league itself can't. Thanks in advance, almighty Roger.

New record U.S tv deal and Seattle coming in. It'll be 97+ in no time.

It will eb minimum 3.5 more this summer alone.

Are we going to pretend the cap won't suddenly?

I'm not commenting on the validity of spending that amount on the core 4. Not at all.
Just that their contracts - whether good or bad - occupy the CAP space - nothing more nothing less.

Yes, the CAP will go up - probably a chunk - hope so. I hope the CAP management becomes easier for the Leafs.

Merely commenting that the amount that Leafs have to spend on defense positions is limited because of existing CAP hits. That just fact.

I don't think that the moronic RFA offer nonsense last year was anything but a fabrication of Dreger and Lebrun. This will proven to be true when they look for upcoming summers same nonsense, which simply can't be aligned with the Leafs... but the Canucks, Islanders and Habs are in a different situation. Let's see of those idiots try the same level of garbage with the other teams.

Well they are not in a great position at the moment.

One of the things I keep looking at is trade options, and its hard to make deals work (esp if they have term) without giving a roster player back. And the thing is there is not much id want to remove from the roster, except Ceci

the only other ones that make sense are Kap/AJ and even they are on fair deals so its not like you want to dump them.

The goal should be to improve the D, and getting a good top D is not exactly easy to fit without removing a significant piece.

Yeah I get it it’s super disappointing.

I know your kid can’t put yourself in his shoes but you can and when he gets asked a 100 times a day sometimes you are just going to look like a Richard. I mean I’m sure every single one of them have done something like that.

The thing is, they can trade anyone they want. They are in the best situation of any team that's at the cap (And that's over half the NHL)

In the NHL if you draft well you get punished. Leafs hit on 3 straight top 10 picks. That assures things will get tight.
Arizona flubbed on some top picks and even they are near the cap max.

Hell, The Rangers are viewed as some great future team and they were capped-out already this summer with no playoff appearances.

The Leafs are spending $ on superstars, many of the early 20's. I'd rather have that than those stupid Lou-like 4th liners getting millions.

Ceci, Bracco, decent piece should get back a pretty good rental.

Dunno if they want to go the rental route Dubas wasn’t interested in it last year.

There are guys with term who could be available.

true story - outside the Sharks practice facility back in 2006-07 or thereabouts...

day prior to a Sharks - Ducks game early in the season... I think Neidermayer had just signed.

my then 7 year old and 8 year old boys were wearing their TeamCanada 04 jerseys....

Pronger and bunch of players blow past the kids... my wife approaches "some old guy with a grey beard (Neidermayer who she obviously didn't recognize) and asks if he could sign their jerseys... Neidermayer talks to the kids for a few minutes... pulls all the guys off the bus and has them sign the jerseys. Kids were over the moon, Scott even grab a couple of Sharks who were around - including Marleau.

I'm not arguing it won't go up, I just find it funny that you pretend to know by how much, when people running the league and franchises don't even know. Is the NHLPA going to use the cap escalator or not, almighty Roger? Seeing as that's pivotal in calculating the cap and isn't agreed on until after the season, I'd like you to look into the future and let us know, omniscient one.
