Yeah I’m not going to let the Islanders game fool me.
He didn’t look great last game.

I wish that would have been the Raycroft for Rask trade - PatC80
Sadly JFJ was probably sober as a judge. Not a Supreme Court Judge, mind you, but you know . . . |

JFJ should have known better.
If Chiarelli thinks something is a good deal, then it's not a good deal. |

I used to post this every franking week, and now it has died down to where I only post it about once a year.
Trading Rask was the right thing to do.
Trading him for Raycroft was the frank-up.
At the time, Pogge was the darling of Toronto and Canada. He was a year older than Rask, and higher on the depth chart.
The rules of the entry draft were different back then - if you didn't sign a Euro in the first two years after drafting him, he went back into the draft and you received no compensation.
Simply put: Rask wasn't ever going to sign in Toronto. The Leafs had to trade him. |

And they needed a goalie because Eddie's back was shot from carrying the team.

I think Rask for Raycroft was orchestrated by Jeff Gorton in his four month stint as interim GM of Boston. I think he's doing a good job with the Rangers now, too. |

We did?
I never understood the rush to decide so early on which goalie prospect to go with. All Leafs needed was a veteran "Stop-Gap" and Manny Legace was available and wanted to sign. There was no need to trade for a young starter and sign long-term with who was in the system.
That's why I love Dubas. He's so patient with prospects and never trades blue chippers. |

As per my email, Rask wasn't going to sign here, and the clock was ticking.
If they didn't sign him (or trade him) by the end of that year, he would have gone back into the draft, and the Leafs would have received nothing. |

You may recall more specifics of the time, but I had watched the world juniors avidly (like most of us with no NHL in 2004-05) and was so high on Rask. When the draft came and we were pick 21, I had hoped that Kopitar would fall, but when he went my next hope was Rask. I liked Rask more than Price (I'm not a scout; sue me. I just did). I was over the moon when we got him.
I don't see why the Leafs couldn't have signed Rask to an ELC. |

Ok. This part is what I don't recall anything about. Had he announced that?
All I recall is that the Leafs braintrust at the time had deemed Pogge to be the goalie of the future and made Rask expendable. That's where the problem had started - I thought - not from Rask's side. |

We did.. Rask wasn't gonna sign here just to play in the AHL. If I recall, he wanted to be in the NHL right away. Everyone felt Pogge was going to be the better of the two. It just didn't work out that way. |

I think it was both. I recall the Leafs wanted him to sign and play in the AHL, and he didn't want to... |

Obviously a small sample size, but the Marincin-Holl pairing has only been on the ice for one 5v5 goal against in the five games since Muzzin got hurt. Pretty solid from an xGA perspective as well
that seems good.

It was - he ran the draft that year too. Check that one out
He's also responsible for signing Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard.
He is basically the one that orchestrated the team Chiarelli takes credit for. |
