Apparently Shero presented Devils ownership group a plan to rebuild and ownership didn't want to rebuild so they both decided to part ways...explains the timing of the firing. - Santo_44
Drafting 1st in two of the last three draft was not rebuilding.
he wanted to start over and draft higher |

Yeah, it was Jankowski supposedly.
He, who has 0G, 1A in 37 games and is -13. Not looking at anyone else on Calgary at all, and having not really watched them this year, I feel that I can safely conclude that all of their problems are solely his fault.
Whenever the Leafs hit on tough times the "you're really missing Kadri" comments seep out of the woodwork, but having watched Kadri since he was rookie . . . I am not sure what Kadri really brought that would help this team in a 3C role.
The grit? The big hits? The enforcement? The tough guy? The added scoring?
As a 3C, he wasn't adding much scoring. He was never as tough or as gritty as people thought - but he had a temper that got him into trouble. Having a bad temper doesn't make you gritty. It makes you a liability.
I thought he had nice hands, and you'd see some deft moves - occasionally, but not often enough - and he had a decent shot, and was a decent passer - but I grew weary of the flopping and falling and flopping and falling and falling.
And falling. - Monkeypunk
Jankowski would have been an upgrade on.... umm... ahh... errr... Gauthier? |

Maybe Shero's plan was to trade Hischier and Hughes? |

cool.
would be good to see him get 20-30 games this year.
but if our plans our to win a cup this year, then he shouldn't be expected to play much come the playoffs. |

There's something to be said for it? There's a time and a place to suck.
Look at Edmonton. They drafted Hall, Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov in back-to-back-to-back years.
Had they traded Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov, they might have landed MacKinnon and Ekblad instead in the subsequent years!
Or, conversely, they sucked at the right time to get McDavid. We sucked at the right time to get Matthews.
This year and next you have Lafreniere and Wright.
I'm not sold on Hischier. I think he's basically RNH v2.0.
I also don't know what to make of Hughes. The hoopla surrounding him was HUGE. He's as fast as McDavid! He thinks the game faster than McDavid! He's a-MAZE-balls! But so far, having watched him at the World Juniors, the World Championships, and now some games with the Devils . . . I'm completely underwhelmed by what I've seen. I'm waiting, I guess, to be wowed. |

Wright is still 2 or 3 years away I'm pretty sure. Kids only 15.

I think he probably wanted to sell of some players.
I’m guessing ownership wants eyes on playoffs next year. |

Why not?
Maybe he can do what Dermott did but actually improve the next few seasons. |

That's what I meant. I could be off, but I thought this was Lafreniere's year, and the one following was Wright's (expected). |

Is the implication dermott hasn't improved? He's 4th on the team in +/- playing with the lower calibre players on the teams blueline.
He has the odd gaff, but he's been one of our more reliable defenseman when push comes to shove. |

But both things can happen, you can trade assets and 'rebuild" and still make the playoffs. they have several good starting points |

Make giveaways that lead to Boston goals? young players tend to make a lot of mistakes while learning.
Sandin didn't look great defensively on his first go around. he has a lot to learn.
Young forwards can get away with a few more mistakes.
mistakes are too often unforgiving for young dmen. Cup winning teams don't have inexperienced dmen playing much of a role. |

I don’t care about plus minus
He’s been heavily sheltered most of his career under Babs and Keefe.
Last night was one of the first times he was given tougher mins and yeah....
He hasn’t improved. |

If we are talking selling this years UFA crop we are talking Vatanen. The rest get you C+ prospects or lottery tickets.
They have some nice pieces they could sell with term like Wood and Coleman. If you are going to rebuild properly you trade those players.
They are going to try and retool their roster it seems. |

I personally see that as a massively dramatic assessment, but I can respect that it totally fits the if you're not the best ever you're poop mentality in Toronto. At least we are consistent. |

I’m not going to single out one mistake and call it a failure.
Doughty has a horrific giveaway that sold their fate the last time they made the playoffs. It doesn’t mean that LA shouldn’t have played doughty...
Overall Dermott provided solid mins in a 3rd pairing role and it contributed to any success they had. |

holl looked slow. was beaten to the puck on the 1st goal.
took a penalty when someone beat him to the outside that lead to another goal.
lots of giveaways by multiple leafs at both bluelines. Spezza had a nice one that lead to a goal.
kerfuct looked pretty useless on 2 of the 1st three goals.
a don't remember dermott screwing up all that much. |

Bad pass back to Tavares which was picked off, lead to rush the other way and a goal for the Panthers. |

Where has he improved?
He has always been pretty decent at zone exits. He was good at that in his rookie season and he is good at that now.
He hasn’t been trusted with any more responsibilities than he was his first season. Keefe recently said before the Panthers game that they need Dermott to step up and they were going to finally test him.
Last game wasn’t a good start for him.
