holl looked slow. was beaten to the puck on the 1st goal.

took a penalty when someone beat him to the outside that lead to another goal.

lots of giveaways by multiple leafs at both bluelines. Spezza had a nice one that lead to a goal.

kerfuct looked pretty useless on 2 of the 1st three goals.

a don't remember dermott screwing up all that much.

I’m not saying Dermott sucks.

I’m saying he’s still the good 3rd pairing sheltered d man he was 2 years ago.

He hasn’t improved like I have hoped.

He might just be what he is, and that’s okay.

Personally I’d use him in a trade while he still has that shiny value and potential.

I’m not going to single out one mistake and call it a failure.

Doughty has a horrific giveaway that sold their fate the last time they made the playoffs. It doesn’t mean that LA shouldn’t have played doughty...

Overall Dermott provided solid mins in a 3rd pairing role and it contributed to any success they had.

- Santo_44

dermott had giveaways in the playoffs that lead to goals. should have be a learning experience for him.

he's a veteran now. he needs to prove he learned from past mistakes.

Aatu Raty (Finland) will likely be the top pick in 2021. Wright in 2022.

cool.

would be good to see him get 20-30 games this year.

but if our plans our to win a cup this year, then he shouldn't be expected to play much come the playoffs.

Wonder why the call up? Injury? Trade? Because we suck?

I don’t remember much bad.

He didn’t do much wrong, he was solid in a sheltered role.

There's something to be said for it? There's a time and a place to suck.

Look at Edmonton. They drafted Hall, Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov in back-to-back-to-back years.

Had they traded Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov, they might have landed MacKinnon and Ekblad instead in the subsequent years!

Or, conversely, they sucked at the right time to get McDavid. We sucked at the right time to get Matthews.

This year and next you have Lafreniere and Wright.

I'm not sold on Hischier. I think he's basically RNH v2.0.

I also don't know what to make of Hughes. The hoopla surrounding him was HUGE. He's as fast as McDavid! He thinks the game faster than McDavid! He's a-MAZE-balls! But so far, having watched him at the World Juniors, the World Championships, and now some games with the Devils . . . I'm completely underwhelmed by what I've seen. I'm waiting, I guess, to be wowed.

I think Hughes is more like an RNH. Smaller skill guy. remember reading an article that said as good as Jack will be, that Quinn Hughes will be even better..

My sense is the #leafs aren't too concerned with burning a year off Rasmus Sandin's contract. Every season is vital when you're in their position. And he may be ready to take a regular spot in the NHL lineup.

Manson has been playing pretty poorly the past few years.

In trading him you hope he returns to the level he played 3 years ago...

I'm not sure I want to commit money to a player like that with a good D man UFA class this summer.

If you want that type of player Dillon is the better choice...He has been better than Manson the past few years and is a UFA.

Dillon has improved the last 2 years and Manson has gotten worse.

- Santo_44

I tend to agree with the more cautious approach unless you get a good player like Lindholm or etc.

Thanks.

I wasn't super impressed by Raty at the WJC. I know, he's an underager, and it's probably an unfair measuring stick to hold to people - but I recall watching Crosby at the WJC when he was an underager, and you could tell he was going to be special. I recall in Eichel's draft year, I wasn't super impressed with him at the WJC (but he was good, just not productive). I was impressed with Matthews, despite him not producing, he did some really clever and crafty things with the puck.

Several years later, I think the two of them are both pretty special players (but don't the Buffalo fans that, they get all uppity).

I think it’s pretty important to see what we have in Sandin with only two NHL d man locked up for next season right now...

Observationally, I love Quinn Hughes. He is fantastic. I was waiting to see the same thing from Jack, based on these quotes on Jack Hughes that I have liberally stolen from eliteprospects:

"Hughes has tremendous first step which sets him apart; at times you don’t notice him cause he is small but when he gets the puck, watch out", ISS Hockey 2019

"Hughes goes from 0-to-60 in a flash and can make plays with the puck at speed that most people can’t even fathom with the benefit of a bird", EPrinkside.com 2019

"His edge work, agility, elusiveness, acceleration and top-gear are elite", Hockeyprospect.com 2019

"His playmaking abilities are exceptional and he’s so poised with the puck, he always makes smart decisions", Future Considerations 2019

"He can go for a full shift with the puck on his stick in the offensive zone and no one can come close to taking it from him", McKeen's Hockey 2019

It doesn't always translate well in the NHL though, where guys are bigger and faster.

Hughes looks pretty young.

Reminds me of how young Nylander looked when he was drafted and we all knew he wasn’t going to jump into the NHL right away.

But too end talent has been pretty poop the last few drafts. Hopefully this next one has some talent it’s no good to have Hischer as the best player coming out of the top in the last 3 years.

I like Dahlin but he’s taken a step back this year...I think eventually he will live up to the hype but D tend to take longer.

Where has he improved?

He has always been pretty decent at zone exits. He was good at that in his rookie season and he is good at that now.

He hasn’t been trusted with any more responsibilities than he was his first season. Keefe recently said before the Panthers game that they need Dermott to step up and they were going to finally test him.

Last game wasn’t a good start for him.

- Santo_44

he made a lot of shifty/sneaky little plays in the neutral zone to push the play up ice. drew a penatly. had one bad pinch, but made a lot smart plays at the blueline otherwise.

CF% 76.92
HDCF% 66.67

dermott was far and away the leafs best dman last night.

I have no doubt Hughes will only get better. I think he'll be better than Hischier. Who knows maybe he will even become a point-per-game player..

Dahlin is starting to feel the effects of playing in Buffalo

If they for example retained half of his salary he might be a decent risk/reward, but for hte most part I agree with you.

Not sure what more you can ask from a 19 year old defenseman with 70 points in 120 games.
