I like it.
Normally the Maple Leafs franchise will only take one blue-chip defenceman, rush him in to the NHL before he is ready, shatter his confidence, have Leafs Nation boo him mercilessly, ruin his career and then dump him.
Two at a time? Much more efficient. - Atomic Wedgie
Leafs have really taken their time in developing young talent now. |

Hopefully Liljegren can throw popcorn on the ice from the press box, slowing down the opposition as they skate unimpeded to our net. |

Let's be fair here:
Dermott: #5, and let's hope he can get better.
Holl: Perhaps a homerish opinion, but he could be fine as a #4 if your #3 is really, really good.
Marincin: can be a #7 on an NHL team. No higher.
Barrie: can be a #3 if he could just get his franking head on right. Right now, his franking head is not on right.
Sandin: needs sheltered, protected, limited minutes. Lord help him tonight.
Ceci: if he was making $1.2 million, he'd be fine as a bottom pairing. But seriously, don't even joke about him on 2nd pairing. |

I hope he plays tonight.
He’s really turned it on the past few months.
He plateaued for so (frank)ing long then he just came out of no where this year and improved leaps and bounds. |

if dermott keeps up his play from the florida game, he's a solid 2nd pair.
i think holl is bottom pairing. |

Babcock needed this team to stick to the plan and grind. Everything would turn out fine. - RogerRoeper
Babcock simply wore out his welcome. Babcock was the perfect coach for the tank season, and for the introduction of the all rookies and structure in the post tank season.
But Babcock simply "wouldn't adapt" to the changing nature of his team.
If you look at his successful Olympic coaching efforts.. even those stacked teams played somewhat stale, grinding defense. It worked because the best Canadian player is the best grinder the NHL has ever seen.
But his schtick simply aged out. The abject stubbornness obviously wore on the players...
every coach, regardless of stupid physco mind games - has a shelf life.
the same will be true for Keefe, eventually..
and the same will be true for Dubas, if the resources that the team has repeatedly fail to progress.
this situation, with both Rielly and Muzzin out will be Dubas first real crisis where the season could be materially impacted... Dubas seems to have "escaped" too much criticism.. for the back-up goalie thing because Keefe's introduction gave them a chance to revive Hutch... which partly worked.
Obviously, Dubas doesn't want to sacrifice resources if doesn't have to... but he may have no choice by to lose someone to get a d-man... even if it is just an interim solution.

I would suggest something different. Sit one of the forwards on the 4th line... dress 7 defensemen, including Barrie. Slot Barrie in as need on the 4th line.. he's pretty much a forward already.
That would keep Barrie around as insurance on D... and allow Barrie to run the PP.
just an idea. |

I still have a lot of faith in Dermott. In his last year in Erie, we ended up seeing them play about 5 times because my buddy wanted to see McDavid play. Dermott was always solid - one of the better players on the ice, and always doing something noticeably good with the puck. It's been 4 or 5 years and Dermott is still someone who is doing something good with the puck. it doesn't work out as reliably as it did against lesser competition now that he's moving up into the top 4, but he's adjusting.
I do think he has that 3/4 potential in him - but honestly I'm thinking that they need to stop sheltering him and he'll have to sink or swim. He's . . what 23 now? That's not "realize your full potential age", but it is "show me what you can do" age.
