Carolina Panthers just signed a college coach with no NFL head coaching experience, maybe no NFL experience at all? to $9m a year over keeping Rivera. Reason it takes that much is college coaches make more than pro coaches and for a longer period of time. - rpeters01
That and college football coaches are paid for their ability to recruit as much as their ability to coach. |

Gerard Gallant is the type of coach that Stan should definitely explore.
Really surprised Vegas let him go. |

The way the team is set up now the Hawks better have a good goalie. The overall team defensive statistics might be getting better, but that is also attributable to getting better goaltending this year. Just look at Lehner's PK save percentage, if the team had last years save %, or Crow's, they would be 28th again as opposed to 10th. The Hawks top 6 forwards are not necessarily known as 2 way either (Kane, ADB, Strome) - LAHawk
I don't disagree, but if you keep the Goalie you limit the chances of adding talent to help fill out the roster. You'll end up counting on several of your prospects to come up and have to make a difference right away |

Wow...that's...shocking to say the very least. Stan doesn't have the balls to fire his puppet...err...I mean Head Coach in Colliton to sign him. Would be pretty awesome cuz that guy has done great with Vegas to this point.
Anyone know why he got fired? I know they're not lighting up the Pacific Division right now and are in 9th place, but they're three points out of first place and five out of being in 2nd for the West. Kinda crazy if you ask me especially considering the success he's had with the team the past two years - Savetheembers33
Gallant's style and drill sargent nature gets old. Look at what happened in Florida. Also, I can definitely see him ending up in Detroit with Stevie Y. |

But do they actually have the balls to go out and do that? I don't see any way Stan gets rid of "his guy" in JC even with the questionable moves he's made. |

Good stuff Tyler. JC just does not get it. His roster decisions????? He just does not get it. Team is going nowhere with him back there. And now Gallant is available. There are options now at HC. |

Perhaps your right. He might be better suited taking over a young talent like Detroit or Seattle when they come in rather than a team like the Hawks with vets.
Then again, his pedigree is pretty good with Vegas and maybe the vets would respect having someone come in and push guys and hold them accountable instead of trying not to "upset" The Core guys because of all that they've done |

THis is a great thought. Since JC has been at the helm, I dont recall much positivity and praise coming from the boys. There has certainly been a loss of swagger and confidence in that group. It may explain the roller coaster ride game to game. |

No kidding. During a stoppage last night, there was a shot of Kane on the bench after he got off. He had his poopy face on and he was mumbling something like " I can't believe this crap". - Rota's Rooter
Saw that. Sadly, not an uncommon occurrence for him this year. And, who could blame him? |

I would be miserable too. The most effective years of his career are being wasted with this organization. |

I've said from the get go that no matter how smart or good at ex's and o's Colliton is, his biggest challenge will be getting the respect from Kane, Toews, Keith, Seabrook, and Crow because he's the same age (or younger) than them and has ZERO pedigree to back up what he's trying to sell.
Colliton may some day be a good coach in this league with the Hawks or with another team, but he was set up to fail when he was brought in trying to win now with this team. He would be in a better position to succeed with a rebuilding team that they both learn and grow together. However, he was picked because he's Stan's guy and has been deemed that since he was hired. They should have given the reigns to someone else for the rest of the year and let JC keep learning and growing the team in Rockford. Then in a few years let him take over when the new "core pieces" are made up of guys he's already coached and they respect what he has to sell to the team. |

Not really aimed just at you, but I don't get what people are thinking here. Colliton has benched Seabrook, and a number of other guys who haven't pulled their weight. You are not going to bench Toews in favor of "young player X" at the beginning of the year because he is still the best center on the team. Colliton is playing the young guys (which is apparently good and bad a the same time). He also has a team that has about 50% NHL caliber players at least competing to get into the playoffs. Does he make some decisions that infuriate/befuddle everyone? Yes. Are there likely more influencing forces making some of these decisions (i.e. playing Gus so much)? Yes.
1) We have NO idea what the FO's actual plans are for this team (development vs being a competitive team.
2) Nobody knows how a different coach will fare with this team., but odds are that the results would be about the same +/- about 3 wins.
3) I wouldn't get your hopes up about a new coach coming in here this year (and likely this offseason) unless there is a seismic shift in the quality of the roster. |

And his salary is part of the reason for it. I am not begrudging him his contract at all. He is worth every penny, but there is a salary cap in place and one player (let alone two) taking up more that 12% of the cap will handcuff a team trying to put other players around them.

Yes. The D system alone is a joke. He does not have the horses to run it. He (JC) could have made everything very simple with a zone D scheme. Schit run a trap if you have to. Watching the highlights last night?!?! We won because Lehner stood on his head. Way too many breakdowns and high danger chances against the Sens. |

It would honestly explain a lot.
Another theory is that they're avoiding large goal totals for youngsters to prevent a panarin situation. Although, it appears too late for Kubalik.
Look at what happened last year with debrincat...he scored 40 goals playing with Kane. Debrincat is not a 40 goal scorer without Kane.
Not too mention, the Hawks played a run and gun style of hockey. They loosened up on the backend, in order to out score the opponent.
We saw inflated goal totals from Toews as well last year.
I do not like what I'm seeing from debrincat this year...his inability to score tight checking greasy goals is going to be big problem come playoffs.
Have we forgotten how Panarin and Kane played in the playoffs? That line was shut down. You can not play like the Harlem Globetrotters in the playoffs.
Without space and time, he's proven to be ineffective. - catrisc
I feel like the "DBC plays well with Kane and vice-versa" is a misconception that fans and sportswriters share. He doesn't do significantly worse, but it's not the magic pill for either of them, except on the PP last year. That well seems to have dried up.
In past couple of years, he's played with Kane 5-on-5 about 1/3 of the time
w/Kane on his line, collectively 0.48 shots/minute and 0.05 goals/minute (with demonstrably worse GA)
w/o Kane 0.55 shots/minute and 0.04 goals/minute
Kane w/o DBC 0.52 shots/minute and 0.06 goals/minute

Which a hockey savant like him probably knew when he and Toews signed their long term deals. Did he think they were gonna be Cup contenders throughout the long term of those deals? Especially with the percentage of the cap hit the two of them were taking up.
Sorry, I'm not joining the pity party. |
