Nylander got $6.9 for 6 2 years ago, before last years RFA crop set the contracting world on its ears. It is turning to pay for future production, versus pay for past production.
6 years buys some UFA years, which currently causes the out years to go up in value. Sam's agent will take advantage of that.
But we shall see.

Which ones were worth trading for and giving up what it would have taken to get them. Botts screwed up with Mitts, but go back and do some research in that 4- 5 year window and see what Centers were drafted and look at picks that's were traded that could have been that 2C for the Sabres. Sabres could have been a very good hockey team right now if the rebuild was not woefully mishandled. Know we are paying for it

I'm thinking Sam will believe he was under paid for the last 2 years by taking the bridge deal, there are few option for a 1RW, and Botts has to sign him sort of like Skinner, but less intense.
Those 2 years cost him 3-4M..over 6 year term that is 500-700k per on new contract.
I don't think he signs for less than $7 short term, mid 7's longer term.
But we shall see.

Teravainen gets 5.4 for 5
Gaudreau gets 6.75 by 6 (older contract, can probably prorate that to 7.5, and he's the best player here)

Most of those contracts were signed after Sam and will be RFAs when they expire. When you start paying for UFA years the price goes up quite a bit. However, the guys you mentioned (most likely all will be $9m+ on their next deals) produce at a higher rate than Sam.

Here are some comparables that I believe Sam lines up with better:

Sam 379 gm 245p, 24yo
Konecny 278 gm 164p, 22 yo, signed in '19, 6y $5.5m
Zucker 448 gm 238p, 26yo, signed in '18, 5y $5.5m
Teräväinen 407gp, 270p, 25yo, signed in '19 5y $5.4m (signed offer sheet and matched)
Keller 217 gm 146p, 21yo, signed in '19, 8y $7.15m


These players all signed as RFAs and will be UFAs when they expire. Numbers are current, not their numbers at signing.

Realistically, I think 7x7 would be more than fair. Higher than some of the comparables, but nearly double his current contract. Front load with bonuses or whatever (that's what the GM gets paid for, to negotiate), and get a deal done. The sooner the better.
