That rule changed in the 50's after Jean Beliveau scored a hat trick on a single 2 minute powerplay. - BINGO!

It’s Bossy,
And Carolina should wait and see if Big Buff comes back and then trade one of their firsts and Suzuki for him. 👍 |

why would they trade essentially a 2019 and 2020 1st round pick for a nearly 35 year old defenseman who hasn't played in 9 months? |

Check the records. Have you ever heard of a player named Wayne Gretzky? Case closed. |

Ovechkin has a realistic shot at breaking Gretzky's career record full stop. If he plays until he's 39 and scores 35-40 per year the rest of the way he's there. Difficult, depending on health / physical decline, but certainly not impossible -- especially since he's averaged nearly 50 per year over just the last 5 years.
Adjusted for scoring era (using Hockey-Reference's adjusted goals metric), he has already passed Gretzky and trails only Howe and Jagr on the all-time list -- both of whom have 600+ more career games played than Ovechkin does currently.
He's also led the NHL in goals scored 8 times (most in history) and in goals per game 8 times (tied for most in history).
I'm willing to entertain other possibilities but Ovechkin has a pretty rock solid case IMO. |

If you drop 1983 Wayne Gretzky into the NHL in 2017 he's barely a 3rd line player.
People talk about how watered down the league is now but the truth is just that the talent gap between players is a LOT smaller than it used to be. It's a different
level entirely from the one Wayne had to play in. - BINGO!
if only we had a time machine of some sort to test this theory out.

Ovi's accomplishments are great and he's tops in this era and deserves serious consideration in the all-time conversation. However, can you be called the greatest pure goal scorer ever if a kinda large % of your goals are scored from the same spot in the same way? |

Agreed it’s Bossy and it’s not even close. - dadeadhead
Bossy only led the league in goal scoring twice. Gretzky, who started his NHL career only two seasons later, did it five times while Bossy was still playing.
And Bossy's .76 goals per game only holds up as the best of all time because, in addition to playing his entire prime in basically the highest scoring era in NHL history, he retired before he had a chance to decline. Over the same age range that Bossy played (21-30), Gretzky scored .80 per game and Lemieux scored .91. |

The Great One vs. The Great Eight
Gretzky had 894G in 1487 Games. That is 0.601 GPG. He played from 1978-1979 to 1998-1999, where the average team scored between 2.63 and 4.01 GPG, for an average of 3.50 over his career.
Ovi has 689G in 1132 Games. That is 0.608 GPG. He has played since 2005-2006. During his career, the average team has scored between 2.71 and 3.08 GPG, for an average of 2.85 over his career.
Ovi scores more GPG than Gretzky, despite Gretzky playing in an era where almost 23% more goals were scored on average.
In short, yes. Ovi is #1. - matty12345
This sums it up almost perfectly!
1. OV
2. Gretz
3. Bossy

The best way to compare players of different eras to to compare them to their peers.
In Gretzky's best year, he scored 92 goals. The next closest guy was Bossy, with 64. Gretzky was 44% better.
In Ovi's best year, he scored 65 goals. The next best was Kovalchuk, with 52. Ovi was 25% better.
Gretzky was so far better than any one of his peers - at least until Mario came along.
That's why they are considered #1 and #2 best forwards of all time.
Sorry, Ovi. |
